Neo Forza eSports NFP075 M.2 2280 2TB PCIe SSD Review

SSD by stefan @ 2021-08-29

The NFP075 2TB M.2 SSD comes with 3D TLC NAND, not QLC and this really reflects in high transfer speeds, even after the pseudo-SLC space has been filled but also when looking at the rated TBW. While Neo Forza guarantees an endurance of 1550 TB for the 2TB model, we have noted an SSD from another brand which uses similar components with a TBW of no less than 3115, so we think that the declared value is a bit low, which is great! The drive positions itself in terms of performance with other high-specced PCIe 3.0 drives on the market such as the Crucial P5 and won't throttle during intense use if installed in a well ventilated case.

Packaging, A Closer Look

After reviewing the 1TB version of the Neo Forza NFP075 eSports M.2 SSD, it is time to also check out the SKU with double the storage space. The new drive shares the packaging characteristics with the previous model, with a small plastic window in the middle, but also logos of the supported technologies such as 3D NAND, SLC caching and LDPC ECC:

On the back side, we will note the drive specifications per each model, some hardware features but also the product internal code name and serial number:

The drive is additionally held inside a transparent plastic mold for protection during transit:

NFP075 comes with a medium-sized sticker on the frontal side of the PCB, reminding us of the brand, code name of the product, the supported bus, capacity but also the full SN:

On the back area, we will find placeholders for four NAND packages but also a RAM cache, none of which being populated:

After removing the frontal sticker, we’ll note the existence of a memory cache, a controller but also four NAND ICs:

The RAM chip for storing the tables was produced by Xi’an UniIC Semiconductors and sports the SCB13H4G160 code name. This one is clocked at 1866Mhz and is of DDR3L type:

The controller is a Phison PS5012-E12S model and supports up to 8 channels with 32 chips, comes with a dual-CPU architecture with built-in 32-bit microcontroller and also packs support for PCIe Gen 3x4 interfaces, being compliant with the NVMe 1.3 standard. The controller was built on TSMC’s 28nm process technology, can be incorporated with both 3D TLC and QLC NAND packages, while on the error correction side we do have support for LDPC ECC and RAID ECC, a DDR ECC engine but also End-to-End Data Path Protection:

The NAND ICs sport the TABHG65AWV code name and are Toshiba BiCS 3D TLC 96-layer:

Conclusive Thoughts

While using ATTO Disk Benchmark, we have observed write rates at even higher values versus the one mentioned in the specs, but also ran a full HD Tune write test after erasing the test drive partition:

Considering the increased storage space, the NFP075 SSD is ideally used in gaming laptops as the primary drive (since it does not get as hot as PCIe 4.0 drives), but can be also installed in powerful workstations in order to work with large projects. Installing and running large games is no issue either, since we are dealing with a model with additional caching RAM (and not DRAMless as we have seen with other low-cost implementations).

The product is not yet available everywhere, but at launch its price will hover around $220. By studying the design on the back of the PCB, we think that a 4TB version could be made available as well as an additional SKU.
