Patriot Viper Elite II 64GB (2x32GB) C20 DDR4 Memory Kit Review

Memory by stefan @ 2021-11-01

The Viper Elite II memory from Patriot does come with plenty of performance, while being compatible with the latest AMD and Intel systems. By offering capacities of up to 64GB, we can use it in high-end systems for running multiple processes as once such as virtual machines, but it is also ready for working with large video projects in DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro 2021. No RGB is available with this series, while the red/black color scheme should nicely fit with most gaming motherboards out there.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Patriot Memory for offering a sample of their Viper Elite II 64GB (2x32GB) C20 DDR4 Memory Kit for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

The new Patriot memory kits from the Viper Elite II line we are going to review in this article do come with quite a bit of capacity, making them ideal for working with very long video projects or running multiple virtual machines at the same time (given the used CPU is also a capable component). These were made to support both AMD and Intel platforms and for maximum compatibility we will recommend the latest generations, due to versions of BIOSes with more capabilities. We are saying this because we did first try it on our 9700K + Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Ultra Gaming combo and we were not able to boot with the kit, even at stock, non-XMP settings!

The kit is shipped inside a very compact cardboard enclosure with a small window, which allows the user to look on how the memory modules do really look (and not a drawing):

On the back side of the box, we will find a small product description in multiple languages, links to online resources but also a sticker with the product code name and serial number:

The box does include a sticker as a bundle, with the nice Viper logo:

The memory modules are protected inside a transparent plastic mold:

The heatspreaders of Viper Elite II do sport a futuristic/military look with a dark red top layer and a black brushed aluminum middle/lower area:

A Closer Look Contd.

A closer look at a single module does show the attention to detail; to fit in with the color scheme, the module PCB is dark as well:

On the opposite side, we will note a sticker with the hardware specifications but also the product code name and serial number:

The top area allows air to flow through and is not covered with a plastic interposer as we have seen with other modules; this design will be particularly enjoyed by people which are not fans of RGB lighting:

A smaller Viper logo is present on the top frame as well:

Test Setup and Test Results Part I

Test Setup

The test system did incorporate a Ryzen 5 5600X 6-core CPU, the Patriot Viper Elite II 64GB (2x32GB) C20 DDR4 memory modules with 16-18-18-38 XMP 2.0 timings, a PowerColor Red Dragon Radeon RX 5700 video card but also a Patriot Memory P200 512GB 2.5’’ SSD; all these were connected to the BIOSTAR B550GTA motherboard. As a power supply we have chosen a Cooler Master 850W non-modular and the system was running the latest Windows 10 OS build as well.

The pre-programmed timings and frequencies can be also found by using AIDA64; the DRAM IC manufacturer is listed as SpecTek:

Here is the memory operating status as confirmed by CPU-Z:

Besides testing the memory modules at XMP timings, we have also compared the results with the ones obtained at 2400, 2666, 3000 and 3200. Afterwards, we tried a bit of overclocking by first setting a frequency of 3800 and while using the stock timings; the system was unbootable even after raising the memory voltage to 1.4, so we guess that these kits are well binned/tested from within the factory.

Conclusive Thoughts

The 64GB DDR 3600MHz kit, as tested, with a CAS latency of 20 has started dropping in price and now it can be found online for about 290 Euros.
