Other by stefan @ 2021-11-21

The KIOXIA EXCERIA High Endurance 256GB microSDXC card performs great for its speed class, going in-line with the declared numbers. It uses BiCS 3D Flash memory from Toshiba and comes with very useful features such as waterproof, shockproof, X-ray proofing, temperature durability, ESD immunity but also overheating/ignition prevention.

Introduction

At first, we would like to thank KIOXIA for sending us a sample of the EXCERIA High-Endurance microSD 256GB Card for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

After the Patriot High Endurance 128GB memory card review, it is time to check out something from KIOXIA as well, and to be more exact the EXCERIA High-Endurance 256GB card with V30 and U3 supported speed classes, while the interface used is UHS-I. This particular card is also available with capacities of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, the 32GB version being the slowest of all and getting downgraded standards from U3 to U1 and also from V30 to V10.

Being a High Endurance product, it is made to be installed in devices with continuous recording such as dashboard cameras, security cameras and more devices you may think of with this capability. When taking about endurance numbers, KIOXIA is not joking: for the 256GB model we have a rating of 40000 hours of continuous operation!

The product is shipped inside a compact cardboard/plastic enclosure, which highlights the usage scenarios, supported standards but also the total storage space:

On the back we will receive even more information regarding the endurance, rated speeds and total storage space after the card has been formatted:

In the package, the card does not come alone, but with the LADP1 microSD to SD adapter, in order to be compatible with a wide range of devices:

The adapter also includes a lock switch, in order to prevent accidental deletion:

On the back side of the adapter, we will find the usual 9 gold-plated pins:

The 256GB EXCERIA High-Endurance card comes with a green accent and more details printed on the frontal area:

On the back we will note the gold-plated contacts:

Test Setup and Test Results

The testbench was composed from the following hardware:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600X

CPU Cooler: Deepcool Captain 240 EX RGB AIO

Motherboard: BIOSTAR RACING B550GTA

RAM: Patriot Memory Viper RGB Series DDR4

Video: PowerColor Radeon 5700 8GB

Power Supply: Cooler Master 850W

SSD: Patriot P200 512GB

Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840

The KIOXIA EXCERIA High-Endurance microSD Memory Card comes formatted exFAT; we have used a Lexar UHS-II USB 3.0 card reader in order to perform the speed tests and formatted it NTFS:

To determine the flash drive read speeds, the HD Tune v5 utility was used:

Summary Graph (Read Performance)

To measure the real life performance, we have used the Total Commander application to copy to the card and from the card the same file and recorded the transfer speeds, when they have stabilized.

Conclusive Thoughts

The KIOXIA EXCERIA High Endurance 256GB microSDXC card performs great for its speed class, going in-line with the declared numbers. It uses BiCS 3D Flash memory from Toshiba and comes with very useful features such as waterproof, shockproof, X-ray proofing, temperature durability, ESD immunity but also overheating/ignition prevention.

The product includes a 3-year warranty and is fully capable of recording in 4K. There is one exception though, for the 32GB SKU, which is slower and can do only FHD (32GB would fill rather fast for 4K recording anyway).

The product, as tested is now available online for about 63 euros.
