SteelSeries Arctis 7P+ Wireless Headset Review

Others by stefan @ 2022-01-31

The Arctis 7P+ is built upon the base of the already great predecessor and adds an improved battery life but also updated USB-C interface on the headset for future proofing. We have found the headset as very comfortable during long periods of use and thanks to the wireless range, you can make sure to keep the headset on and do other hobbies as well, without the need of remaining in front of the sound source. It is compatible with quite a bit of devices and the microphone hidden in the left cup fits our preferences versus a fully-removable one.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank SteelSeries for offering the Arctis 7P+ Wireless Headset for testing and reviewing.

About SteelSeries:

"From day one, SteelSeries has been focused on making high performance gaming gear used by the most demanding, top professional gamers worldwide and peripherals that provide superior quality and a competitive edge to gamers of all skill levels. We believe, as most gamers do, in winning, not trying!

What originally began with two people who recognized the need for superior, high-quality/performance gaming gear that would give gamers a competitive edge, has grown into a global leader in gaming and entertainment gear sought after for their high performance capabilities.

Fast-forward to today, and we’ve come a long way since our first glass mousepad. We have global offices in North America, Europe, and Asia, providing an integrated portfolio of products designed specifically for gaming. Fueling our growth is you, the gamer!

While we are proud of our technology and product innovation, we are even more excited about how these products are developed to meet the needs of gamers. Many companies may claim to develop superior gaming products but few actually do. Instead, they spend countless hours with lab engineers trying to force fit a new technology with bells and whistles and mediocre functionality for the end-user.

At SteelSeries, we develop our products with a small internal team and a vast network of technology partners, channel partners, game publishers, and gaming communities around the globe. We aren’t afraid of being challenged and implementing new ideas. Our main goal is to always to listen to the collective feedback of our professional gaming community.

We won’t bore you with cheeky slogans, trying to underline our authenticity as gamers. We fully acknowledge that the best professional gamers in the world know more about what they want and what will make them better, than we do. We are proud to be working with our partners, but we can’t take credit for their invaluable input and feedback. Instead we tell it like it is: they help us. We want to know what works and what doesn’t. For this reason, SteelSeries creates innovative solutions that provide a competitive advantage for all gamers.

Critical to our company’s success is also our reinvestment in the gaming communities and the individuals who support them. As a result, our corporate philosophy is to take a substantial portion of our revenue and put it back into the gaming community to help spur industry growth. We support our community in numerous ways, ranging from co-hosting tournaments like Iron Lady and King of the Hill, and supporting gaming competitions of all sizes, to promoting the top and up-and-coming gaming teams/organizations.

Put simply, SteelSeries does not claim to invent or reinvent the gaming industry. Nor do we focus on one specific product, copy other companies or follow the crowd.

Instead we leave it to you, the gamer, our customer/partner/inspiration, to decide if we are deserving of such declarations and accolades. What we do promise, however, is to remain committed to you. We will continue to work with you and the gaming community to make the best products possible and give you that competitive edge. We will continue to do our best to support the growth of the professional gaming industry and give back to the gaming communities. By doing so, we don’t just talk a good game, we win!"

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

Recently SteelSeries has updated their Arctis 7 series of headsets with a new member: the Arctis 7P+. The product was manufactured with PlayStation 5 compatibility in mind, but it will also operate just fine with other devices such as PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Android, USB-C iPads and others. As opposed to the previous 7P model, the battery is now upgraded to offer 30 hours of continuous usage and the micro-B port was upgraded to USB-C for futureproofing.

The product is shipped inside a medium-sized box with a large photo of the product in the front, but also highlights of the main product features; as the 7P, the headset is available in two color schemes, white and black:

On one of the sides, SteelSeries does show the included cables via drawings but also how the connection setup should be performed, depending on the audio source. Furthermore, we will receive info regarding the wireless range but also the microphone and drivers’ specifications:

A full list of product awards is available on the opposite area:

The main product features are explained in more detail on the back:

After unsealing the box, we will spot even more instructions:

The inner cardboard layer comes with a PlayStation blue background and the “For Glory” SteelSeries saying, written with capital letters:

Both headset and its accessories are held secure inside a black plastic mold:

Some documentation is also supplied in a transparent plastic envelope:

We will receive a Product Information Guide but also a leaflet with links to Internet resources:

A Closer Look Part II

The Arctis 7P+ headset in white does resemble the PlayStation 5 chassis color scheme really well, made in white, black and blue color accents:

The outside of the cups feature a plastic cover with a rubberized finish; the SteelSeries logo can be clearly distinguished here as well:

The sidetone wheel on the right cup does allow us to configure the microphone monitoring volume, to have a better understanding on how we do sound like in conferences:

The Power button is RGB-enabled and besides the current operating mode it will also show the battery status:

On the left cup we will find the microphone mute button, but also the Volume wheel:

Further down we will note the Mobile Cable port but also the Headphone Share jack; the Mobile Cable port is proprietary and is used for installing the 3.5mm cable to connect to any analog, Stereo sound source while the 3.5mm jack can be used for connecting another stereo headset to the Arctis 7P+ and listen together with a friend. The updated charging port is now updated to USB-C for future-proofing:

The retractable microphone has the same design we have seen with older Arctis models and we enjoy it much better than removable designs. On its tip there is also a red LED which lights up when the microphone is muted. In terms of specs, the pickup pattern is bidirectional, it has a frequency response between 100 and 6500Hz, a sensitivity of -38dBV/Pa, while the impedance is 2200Ohm:

Its body is very flexible and can be easily adjusted in the desired position and we would also like to mention that it is Discord Certified!

A Closer Look Part III

The interior of the large cups does feature AirWeave Ear Cushions, which do use fabric found with athletic clothing and do allow skin to breathe while used for long time periods. The inner drivers are 40mm, feature a frequency response between 20 and 20000 Hz, a sensitivity of 98 dBSPL, while the total harmonic distortion is less than 3%. These are basically the same drivers from the 7P model:

The Sky Google Headband is also available here:

It is easily adjustable from the top:

The headband is made of durable steel to help with chassis reinforcement:

Here are the four cables we do receive as a bundle:

The Mobile Cable is the first one and enables playback on all analog devices; during this operation mode, the headset will turn the battery operation off and the audio quality will be strictly dependent on the source:

The second one is the USB-A to USB-C extension cable for the Wireless dongle, to place it in an optimal position:

The USB-C charging cable is next:

The WiFi transmitter retains the same size as before and may pose some clearance issues if directly connected to the computer, since it may obstruct the nearby ports as well:

This small issue is gone when using the included adapter:

SteelSeries GG Part I

GG is a unified software from SteelSeries incorporating lots of features, but also the Engine we knew from before; it can be used with a SteelSeries account or in Guest mode:

The Home area comes with promotions but also guides:

Moments does help when we would like to perform gameplay recordings:

Engine is the area to navigate to when working with the headset settings:

A Giveaways section is also present here:

Sonar is a new feature present with the latest headsets:

Some configuration is needed prior to accessing the feature:

SteelSeries GG Part II

An advanced mixer can be accessed right away, much more advanced than from Engine:

The Gaming area allows working with an advanced EQ and we can configure Gain, Frequency and Q Factor as well:

Chat area has a separate EQ, but we can also enable filters such as Noise Reduction or Volume Stabilizer:

Same goes for the Microphone menu:

Moving on to the regular Engine section, we will be presented new functions regarding the Power button, EQ settings, presets, a Power Management function but also Mic details:

The 10-band EQ has some presets available:

The Power Management feature allows selection after how many minutes the headset will be turned off to save battery life:

The Microphone volume and preview functions can be accessed as well (Preview uses Windows Live monitoring function which has a bit of delay):

Conclusive Thoughts

The Arctis 7P+ is built upon the base of the already great predecessor and adds an improved battery life but also updated USB-C interface on the headset for future proofing. We have found the headset as very comfortable during long periods of use and thanks to the wireless range, you can make sure to keep the headset on and do other hobbies as well, without the need of remaining in front of the sound source. It is compatible with quite a bit of devices and the microphone hidden in the left cup fits our preferences versus a fully-removable one.

The headset is fully compatible with PlayStation 5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech but if you aim with using it along with your PC/laptop you have plenty of options to configure via the Sonar feature, which is now in Beta stage, besides the usual Engine. No RGB is present on the cups and this is basically a good thing because RGB cannot be enjoyed by the wearer when talking about a headset and would be only an extra waste of battery life.

The product is available in two color schemes (white or black) and can be picked up online for about 180 Euros.
