KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS 1TB microSDXC Memory Card Review

Other by stefan @ 2022-05-02

The performance of the EXCERIA PLUS is in-line with the declared value, so great for the intended 4K recording activity focus. Besides the actual testing, we have used the card inside the GoPro Hero 9 Black in order to record 4K 24FPS, 4K 30FPS but also 5K 24 and 30FPS video, more than two hours long at each attempt and we haven’t encountered any issues at all!

Introduction

At first, we would like to thank KIOXIA for sending us a sample of the EXCERIA PLUS 1TB microSDXC Memory Card for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

In this article we will look upon another UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) microSDXC card from KIOXIA, meant for sports and action cameras, given the high rated read/write speeds. The product comes in two different colors, magenta for 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities, while the 1TB model is black.

The card is shipped inside a very compact cardboard enclosure, with an inner transparent plastic layer, so we will note how the product and its bundle really looks like, instead of using a photo:

On the back, KIOXIA notes that the product is especially meant for 4K video recording, is compatible with the IPX7 standard, comes with shockproof capabilities and can be also used on Android platforms. Here we will also find the total usable capacity (921.6GB), the product internal code name but also its serial number:

Some instructions are available on the inside layer as well:

The transparent plastic layer does keep the KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS and the LADP1 adapter sealed:

The microSD adapter allows the card to be used in more devices:

It does also come with a write lock switch:

On the back, we will note 9 gold-plated contacts:

The card comes with a very small footprint, but KIOXIA has managed to fit here the card name, the capacity but also the supported standards, on a black background:

On the back, we will note eight gold-plated contacts, but also a semi-transparent PCB:

We will test the microSDXC EXCERIA PLUS 1TB with a Lexar USB adapter:

Test Setup and Test Results

The testbench was composed from the following hardware:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600X

CPU Cooler: Deepcool Captain 240 EX RGB AIO

Motherboard: BIOSTAR RACING B550GTA

RAM: Patriot Memory Viper RGB Series DDR4

Video: PowerColor Radeon 5700 8GB

Power Supply: Cooler Master 850W

SSD: Patriot P200 512GB

Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840

The KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS 1TB Memory Card comes formatted exFAT; we have used a Lexar UHS-II USB 3.0 card reader in order to perform the speed tests and formatted it NTFS:

To determine the flash drive read speeds, the HD Tune v5 utility was used:

Summary Graph (Read Performance)

To measure the real life performance, we have used the Total Commander application to copy to the card and from the card the same file and recorded the transfer speeds, when they have stabilized.

Conclusive Thoughts

The performance of the EXCERIA PLUS is in-line with the declared value, so great for the intended 4K recording activity focus. Besides the actual testing, we have used the card inside the GoPro Hero 9 Black in order to record 4K 24FPS, 4K 30FPS but also 5K 24 and 30FPS video, more than two hours long at each attempt and we haven’t encountered any issues at all!

If the card is picked in the 1TB SKU flavor, we will have quite a bit of space to work with before it runs out so frequent card swapping will be a thing of the past. The card is backed up by a 5-year warranty, while incorporating multiple additional features such as waterproofing, shock-proofing, X-ray proofing, temperature durability, ESD immunity but also overheating/ignition prevention.

The product can be picked up online for about 248 Euros.
