Silicon Power Marvel Xtreme M80 1TB USB 3.2 Gen2 Flash Drive Review

Other by stefan @ 2022-05-30

While the Marvel Xtreme M80 may look like the run-of-the-mill USB Flash Drive, it really packs a punch by succeeding to deliver fast read/write transfer speeds but also coming in large capacities (250GB, 500GB, 1TB), so we may consider it a veritable portable SSD!

Introduction

Packaging, A Closer Look

Silicon Power is aiming towards the high-end segment of USB Flash Drives via their Marvel Xtreme M80 product, with rated reads of up to 600MB/s and writes up to 500MB/s! It supports the Type-A USB 3.2 Gen2 bus and can be purchased with capacities of 250GB, 500GB and 1TB, which we do find regularly with SSDs rather than USB Flash Drives.

The Marvel Xtreme M80 does arrive in a simple packaging made from cardboard, with a transparent plastic interior, where the actual drive is housed:

The back side we will note a short description of the product, the addresses of the SP offices, online resources but also the product code name and serial number:

The Marvel Xtreme M80 does come with a brushed aluminum housing, while the sides are made from transparent plastic:

The bottom plastic cover does also allow us to attach a lanyard:

In the front, we do have a transparent port cover:

On the other side of the drive, we did not find any other notes/markings:

Test Setup and Test Results

The testbench was composed from the following hardware:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600X

CPU Cooler: Deepcool Captain 240 EX RGB AIO

Motherboard: BIOSTAR RACING B550GTA

RAM: Patriot Memory Viper RGB Series DDR4

Video: PowerColor Radeon 5700 8GB

Power Supply: Cooler Master 850W

SSD: Patriot P200 512GB

Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840

The drive comes preloaded with the online registration tool shortcut:

Here is the total storage space reported by Windows OS; the drive comes formatted FAT32 by default. For testing purposes we will re-format it to NTFS:

To determine the flash drive read speeds, the HD Tune v5 utility was used:

For some reason, HD Tune File Benchmark has thrown out an error:

Summary Graph (Read Performance)

To measure the real life performance, we have used the Total Commander application to copy to the flash drive and from the flash drive the same file and recorded the transfer speeds, after they have stabilized.

Conclusive Thoughts

While the Marvel Xtreme M80 may look like the run-of-the-mill USB Flash Drive, it really packs a punch by succeeding to deliver fast read/write transfer speeds but also coming in large capacities (250GB, 500GB, 1TB), so we may consider it a veritable portable SSD!

The aluminum enclosure allows the drive to eliminate heat faster and overall, it is a very light product, at about 8.5 grams.

In terms of pricing, the 1TB model can be found online for about 142.75 Euro, the 500GB for about 76 Euros, while the 250GB one is available for about 48.9 Euros.
