Toshiba Canvio Basics 2022 2TB USB 3.2 Gen 1 External HDD Review

HDD by stefan @ 2023-02-26

The mainstream Canvio Basics 2022 USB 3.2 Gen 1 External HDD from Toshiba does trade punches with the Canvio Slim we have tested some time ago, since it incorporates the exact MQ04UBD200 2.5’’ drive inside. The new chassis is easy to hold onto due to its grippy finish, while the potential customers can choose capacities up to 4TB.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Toshiba Corporation for offering a sample of their Canvio Basics 2022 2TB USB 3.2 Gen 1 External HDD for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

Toshiba has refreshed the Canvio series featuring portable external HDDs with the new Basics series, which incorporates a redesigned matt finish lightweight chassis, support for USB 3.2 Gen 1 bus and capacities ranging from 1TB and up to 4TB.

The product has arrived inside a small cardboard enclosure, which shows the product in operation right in the middle area, along with the capacity and its main highlights:

On the side, we will be informed that the current drive takes part of the Standard offerings of Toshiba:

The opposite area includes the Canvio Basics compatibility details, but also the list of package contents:

The main product highlights are detailed written again on the back, in multiple languages:

After removing the top packaging layer, we will note that the drive is held secure inside a cardboard mold, which does also hold the data transfer cable. The Quick Start Guide is also included inside:

Let’s take a closer look at the Canvio Basics 2022!

The supplied cable does feature a Micro-B 3.0 connector on the drive side and not the more familiar USB-C for some reason:

A Closer Look Contd.

At just about 149 grams, the product is very light, while the rounded edges along with the matt, grippy finish do make it easy to hold in the hand:

The Toshiba logo can be found recessed on the surface:

An activity LED is also present here:

Here is a look at the sides as well:

The Micro-B port is in the vicinity of the activity LED, since the USB-to-SATA converter board is also present here:

The bottom area does come with a large sticker, highlighting the supported standards, the product internal code name, its serial number but also the power rating:

Let’s connect the drive to our test machine and check out the results!

Test Setup and Extra Info

The test system did incorporate a AMD Ryzen 5 7600X 6-core CPU, a Sabrent Rocket 2x16GB DDR5 4800MHz C40 memory kit, a PowerColor Red Dragon Radeon RX 5700 video card but also a Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus NVMe 4.0 2TB SSD; all these were connected to the BIOSTAR X670E VALKYRIE AM5 motherboard. As a power supply we have chosen a Cooler Master 850W non-modular and the system was running the latest Windows 11 OS build as well.

When powered on for the first time, we will see that the Canvio Basics 2TB has been formatted NTFS from the factory:

With the help of AIDA64, we will be able to extract some more information about the drive, which is a Toshiba MQ04UBD200, with a platter rotation speed of 5400RPM:

On the drive we will find the manual in electronic PDF format, but also links to extra software online:

Conclusive Thoughts

The mainstream Canvio Basics 2022 USB 3.2 Gen 1 External HDD from Toshiba does trade punches with the Canvio Slim we have tested some time ago, since it incorporates the exact MQ04UBD200 2.5’’ drive inside. The new chassis is easy to hold onto due to its grippy finish, while the potential customers can choose capacities up to 4TB.

The Canvio Basics comes with easy plug-and-play operation but includes a Micro-B connector on the drive side instead of the USB-C interface, which is bulkier.

The product, as reviewed can be found online for about 58.9 Euros, a price which can be considered affordable given the 2TB capacity and follows the offerings from other manufacturers.
