Crucial Pro 2x24GB DDR5 6000MHz Memory Kit Review

Memory by stefan @ 2024-01-21

The capacities of 24GB or 48GB per module were quite unusual until recently and, on both AMD, Intel platforms UEFI updates were necessary in order to fit such kits and be able to boot. The extra capacity is appreciated and, from our tests we have observed that the Crucial Pro 48GB can offer quite a bit of performance by using the same timings, up to 6600MHz.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Crucial for sending a sample of their 2x24GB DDR5 6000MHz Memory Kit for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

After checking out the regular Crucial DDR5 Classic modules, it is now time to look upon the Pro series, which is integrating heat spreaders as well. The modules we have received in our labs do have a capacity of 24GB each, for a total of 48GB, a frequency of 6000MHz and multiple XMP / EXPO profiles. The kit is shipped inside a simple cardboard/plastic enclosure, which allows the potential customer to see how the modules do really look, instead of checking out a product photo:

On the packaging, we will be also reminded of the compatible platforms:

The back side does include a product description, but also some main highlights, in different languages:

The two modules can be easily removed from the dedicated packaging:

On the frontal area of the heat spreader, we will note the Crucial logo, but also the product name in white, on a black background; we appreciate the fact that the PCB is black as well, which gives an overall professional look:

The back side does come with a similar design, only that an extra, central sticker is included, which does show the internal code name of the module, the capacity, the running speed, the rated voltage but also the CAS latency:

A nice central logo is present in the top area as well!

A closer look under the module does reveal the fact that we are dealing with a single-sided build:

Test Setup and Test Results Part I

Test Setup

CPU: Intel i7-13700K @ Stock

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Silent Loop 2 360mm AIO

Motherboard: BIOSTAR Z790 VALKYRIE LGA1700

RAM: currently tested kit

Video: PowerColor RX 5700

Power Supply: Cooler Master 850W

SSD: Silicon Power US70 1TB PCIe 4.0

Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840

The pre-programmed timings and frequencies can be also found by using AIDA64; the DRAM IC manufacturer is listed as Micron:

The main XMP profile is 6000 CL48, with a frequency of DDR5-6000, a rated voltage of 1.1V and CAS timings of 48-48-48-96. Crucial has also included a backup XMP one (5600 CL46) which comes with a frequency of DDR5-5600, an operating voltage of 1.1V and CAS latencies of 46-45-45-90. In terms of EXPO, we do get one DDR5-6000 profile with an operating voltage of 1.1V and CAS timings of 49-49-49-97, while the secondary, backup profile is DDR5-5600, with the same 1.1V voltage and CAS timings of 46-45-45-90.

We did first start testing this kit on our BIOSTAR Z790 VALKYRIE LGA1700 and the stability at stock speeds and had no stability issues.

DDR5-5600

DDR5-6000

Overclocking stage was next, which implied raising the frequency to 6200MHz, while leaving the stock CAS latencies. The system has proven itself very stable with only a small voltage jump at 1.25!

Next, we ran at 6400MHz, also with the same timings and sub-timings and we were impressed by full system stability at 1.25V!

Judging the current results, we went ahead and raised the frequency to 6600MHz and obtained full stability:

While our TM5 stability tests were solid at 6800MHz, we got crashes in SuperPI, so we did stop here.

Conclusive Thoughts

The capacities of 24GB or 48GB per module were quite unusual until recently and, on both AMD, Intel platforms UEFI updates were necessary in order to fit such kits and be able to boot. The extra capacity is appreciated and, from our tests we have observed that the Crucial Pro 48GB can offer quite a bit of performance by using the same timings, up to 6600MHz.

The Pro memory line from Crucial does incorporate a low-profile heat spreader in order not to minimize compatibility with larger CPU cooling systems, while assisting with heat dissipation. In our tests, with the RAM voltage increased to 1.25 the modules barely became warm so these can function in smaller case enclosures with less-than-ideal airflow as well. Crucial did not opt-in to include RGB effects on this series, something which was available on their old Ballistix RGB series.

The currently tested kit is now available online for about 175 Euros, close to other 48GB kits on the market which sport similar specs.
