XTRFY M4 RGB TOKYO Gaming Mouse Review

Mice & Keyboards by stefan @ 2024-02-16

Since there is not a lot of configuration we can perform on the M4 RGB TOKYO, we went ahead and started some gaming sessions; we have tried multiple genres such as Escape Simulator, The Last of Us Part I, Alan Wake American Nightmare and Alan Wake II but also New World and we felt right at home with the mouse shape and tracking, without the need to get used to with the shape.

Introduction

At first, we would like to thank CHERRY XTRFY for offering a sample of their XTRFY M4 RGB TOKYO Gaming Mouse for testing and reviewing.

Product Features, Specifications

Product Features:

TOKYO EDITION.

The M4 Tokyo is a special edition of the M4 ultra-light gaming mouse, inspired by our experiences from the world’s largest city – and a tribute to Japanese video game culture, tech and craft. This elegantly designed Hinomaru-inspired colorway is topped off by a glossy finish, and released in a limited quantity.

LIMITED AND NUMBERED.

5000 numbered M4 Tokyo mice are available worldwide. Grab yours at xtrfy.com or your local reseller – while supplies last.

ULTRA-LIGHT, ERGONOMIC, TOP-GRADE. MEET THE M4.

Lightweight construction. State-of-the-art components. Unique, right-handed shape. The M4 takes the performance, feel and durability of lightweight gaming mice to the next level.

STAND OUT. IN-GAME AND IRL.

Starting Project 4, it was clear. The M4 wasn’t only going to make an impression in-game – we wanted to create something special for all gamers out there. The M4 comes in a series of different colorways, with the Tokyo edition complementing the 5 original versions.

LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN. ERGONOMIC SHAPE.

The M4 features an ergonomic, right-handed design – uniquely constructed to weigh less without compromising on shape and feel. Formed by feedback from professional esporters as well as casual gamers, the result is a brand new shape and size.

3389 STATE-OF-THE-ART SENSOR.

With Pixart’s highest-performing gaming sensor, you’re ready for the next level. On-the-fly sensitivity settings from 400 to 16 000 Real CPI. 125–1000 Hz polling rate. 400 IPS. Self-adjusting FPS. Translation: Top-grade performance.

QUALITY FIRST.

The M4 is not just designed to be extremely light. It’s built to last. At 69 grams, we’ve focused on creating the best lightweight gaming mouse rather than cutting down on durability to get rid of a few extra grams. Lower weight must never mean lower quality. No compromises.

STRONG CONSTRUCTION. DURABLE COMPONENTS.

The shell of the mouse is thoroughly engineered to minimize weight while retaining durability. On the inside, the glowing Xtrfy logo is surrounded by nothing but quality components. Our Omron switches will give you 20 million pro-player optimized clicks.

GRIP AND FEEL.

The M4 glides smoothly on 100 % PTFE skates with rounded edges. While the glossy coating in combination with the structure of holes make for an even better grip over the ergonomic mouse body. Enhancing airflow under your palm, the holes also help you stay comfortable.

RGB ILLUMINATION.

With customizable lighting, it’s easy to add your personal touch to the M4. Choose your color. Switch between numerous LED effects. Adjust the brightness. Or turn the illumination off. All settings are made directly on the mouse.

XTRFY EZCORD® PRO (NEW).

The M4 Tokyo edition comes with the new Xtrfy EZcord Pro. Softer, lighter and more flexible, but not at the cost of durability. At Xtrfy, quality comes first and the EZcord Pro is made to last.

ARM 32-BIT MICROCONTROLLER.

Fast swipes require high-speed processing. The M4 is powered by an ARM 32-bit microcontroller for uncompromising speed and stability.

DUST AND SPLASH RESISTANT.

We’ve covered the inside of the mouse in conformal coating to protect the components against dust, splashes and LAN night mishaps.

MADE WITH RECYCLED PLASTIC.

We strive towards reducing our carbon footprint wherever possible. The shell of this mouse is made out of 60% recycled plastic.

Packaging, A Closer Look Part I

The XTRFY M4 series of mice from CHERRY XTRFY does come with lots of color flavors and it does feature a very light construction, while the proven Pixart 3389 sensor does allow tracking up to 16000 CPI, satisfying mainstream but also the professional crowd. The Tokyo Edition does incorporate an unique glossy design and RGB, inspired by Japan’s multitude of bright advertisement lights on the streets.

The XTRFY M4 RGB TOKYO is shipped inside a compact cardboard enclosure, with the Japan flag on top, along with a photo of the gaming mouse:

On the side, we will note some product highlights:

An example of Tokyo’s city lights are present on the opposite area:

The bottom layer does show the mouse chassis measurements, but we will also get accustomed to the M4 RGB TOKYO specifications:

After removing the seal, we can lift the top cover, in order to check out the inside contents; the mouse is secured inside a black plastic mold, together with some extra bundle:

We will actually receive to bonus keycaps to fit with MX switch compatible stems, that follow the product color scheme, but also a small envelope:

The white keycap does come with the XTRFY brand logo, while the red one comes with “GG”. Both keycaps do support switch lighting:

Inside the envelope, we will find a backup set of PTFE feet, an XTRFY logo but also a Quick Start Guide:

The Quick Start Guide does explain the mouse functions which can be achieved with buttons and button combinations, considering that this model is not backed up by a dedicated software:

A Closer Look Part II

The M4 RGB looks really good with its TOKYO color scheme and for the sake of low weight, CHERRY XTRFY went with a holed design; at just 69 grams, the mouse feels great in hand and we can note a shape specifically made for right-handed people. In the front the mouse does have a width of 56mm, in the middle we will note about 60mm, while in the back the footprint is larger, about 68mm. M4 RGB does have a length of 120mm and the tallest area measures 38mm, making it ideal for a claw or palm grip:

The shiny surface does offer quite a bit of grip, the holed pattern continues in the left/right button area as well and the middle scroll wheel does feature rubber on the sides, while the middle area allows LED lighting to shine through. The left and right button switches are Omron D2FC-F-7N with a durability rating of 20 million actuations and are quite silent when pressed. The top middle button for cycling between RGB presets and the scroll wheel do use Huano Yellow switches:

The holed design is present on the left as well, together with two extra buttons, featuring a red color scheme (also Huano Yellow); a RGB opaque frame is present here as well, in order to enhance the TOKYO theme of the mouse:

The curved back area is comfortable thanks to the non-aggressive hump:

On the right area, we can see again the holed pattern, along with the RGB frame:

A look from the frontal area of the mouse does show that the RGB frame is also present here, so you will be quite the point of attraction when using this mouse, even at the office!

The bottom cover is black and the white accents are represented by the white PTFE feet, but also the extra buttons; the middle sensor is a Pixart PMW 3389 and we have found it as well with the DM5 Blink from Dream Machines, the XTRFY M42 RGB, the Dream Machines DM1 and more, so it is a very safe choice by CHERRY XTRFY in order to obtain an excellent combination. It can be used with the dedicated 8 DPI steps and we did not notice any issues with the tracking such as extra acceleration or jitter:

The M4 RGB TOKYO is produced in limited quantities and on the back sticker we will note that this is sample 2301 out of a total of 5000:

A Closer Look Part III

The CPI button does allow the user to jump between CPI stages (400, 800, 1200, 1600, 3200, 4000, 7200 and 16000); each step is accompanied by a separate LED color, in order to identify the step you are in easier:

The Polling Rate switch does allow you to navigate between 125Hz, 500Hz and 1000Hz:

The supplied 1.8m XTRFY EZcord Pro is light and flexible such as other paracord cables which are oriented towards professional gaming use, in order not to introduce extra drag:

The cable ends up with a custom, black USB-A connector, which is also gold-plated for optimal contact:

After powering on the mouse, the RGB lighting started showing the mouse features; thanks to the bright LEDs and holed design, it is a pleasure to look at it, from all angles:

Impressions and Conclusive Thoughts

Since there is not a lot of configuration we can perform on the M4 RGB TOKYO, we went ahead and started some gaming sessions; we have tried multiple genres such as Escape Simulator, The Last of Us Part I, Alan Wake American Nightmare and Alan Wake II but also New World and we felt right at home with the mouse shape and tracking, without the need to get used to with the shape. We did really like the glossy finish, since it helps with the grip and it is a feature we haven’t seem very often with other brands; our least preferred design is rubberized paint, which shows signs of wear quite rapidly due to accumulation of lint and skin oils.

The M4 RGB TOKYO feels quite solid, is not creaking during use, while the low weight helps with comfort and also when we need to perform sudden movements while gaming competitively. The mouse buttons are durable enough, silent when actuated, while the lack of software is many times preferred by people which like products to be plug-and-play, without spending a lot of time for configuration purposes.

The M4 RGB TOKYO can be found online for about 61 Euros at the time of review; we think that this a fair price for what we are getting, with very good quality materials so get it while you can (only 5000 are actually produced).
