Crucial Pro 2x48GB DDR5 5600MHz Memory Kit Review

Memory by stefan @ 2024-03-24

The Crucial Pro 96GB kit is not a kit designed for overclocking and insanely low timings, but it is more oriented towards capacity in order to allow usage of multiple RAM-consuming processes at once such as virtual machines or for editing large video projects. You can be sure that by installing such a kit you will benefit from complete system stability, for both AMD and Intel platforms and you also have the choice of running two different profiles.

Introduction

At first we would like to thank Crucial for sending a sample of their 2x48GB DDR5 5600MHz Memory Kit for testing and reviewing.

Packaging, A Closer Look

Another memory kit has arrived to our test labs from Crucial, but this time a high-capacity model. It takes part of the Pro series (low profile heatsinks), come with 48GB per module and were designed to run at relaxed, JEDEC timings of 46-45-45.

The kit does arrive inside a simple cardboard / transparent packaging for easy access; here we will note the kit operating frequency, its capacity but we will also note the advertisement of the XMP and EXPO preloaded profiles:

On the back side, we will note a small product description, in multiple languages, but also a sticker with the product code name and serial number:

The transparent plastic mold in which the kit is held secure can be re-used when the modules are temporarily stored:

The modules do include a professional-looking low-height heatsink, with a matte black color scheme, while the inscriptions are printed in white. The manufacturer wanted to ensure an optimal compatibility with larger cooling systems and would fit even in smaller computer chassis:

On the left side, we will note the Crucial logo:

The right side includes the product branding:

On the opposite area, we do have a similar design, plus an extra central sticker:

On the sticker, we will note the product code name, the capacity, designated speed, operating voltage but also the CAS latency:

On the top area of the frame, we will note a subtle product logo:

Test Setup and Test Results Part I

Test Setup

CPU: Intel i7-13700K @ Stock

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Silent Loop 2 360mm AIO

Motherboard: BIOSTAR Z790 VALKYRIE LGA1700

RAM: currently tested kit

Video: XFX Radeon 7900 XT

Power Supply: Cooler Master 850W

SSD: Silicon Power US70 1TB PCIe 4.0

Case: Cooler Master ATCS 840

The pre-programmed timings and frequencies can be also found by using AIDA64; the DRAM IC manufacturer is listed as Micron:

The modules do feature no less than four profiles, two which are XMP 3.0 and two EXPO. The first XMP 3.0 profile is named as 5600 C46, with operating voltages of 1.1V for VDD and 1.1V for VDDQ, while the main timings are set at 46-45-45-90. The second XMP 3.0 profile is named 5200 CL42, with operating voltage of 1.1V for both VDD and VDDQ, while the main timings are set at 42-42-42-84.

The first EXPO profile is named DDR5-5600, with 1.1V operating voltage (both VDD and VDDQ), while the memory timings are set at 46-45-45-90. The secondary EXPO profile does carry the same operating voltage, the DDR5-5200 name, while the timings are set at 42-42-42-84.

We did first start testing this kit on our BIOSTAR Z790 VALKYRIE LGA1700 and the stability at stock speeds and had no stability issues.

Overclocking stage was next, which implied raising the frequency to 6000MHz, while working with the lower main latencies with the DDR5-5200 profile (42-42-42-84). The system did prove as fully-stable and this was done at the main voltage of 1.1V!

Raising the frequency to 6200MHz resulted in an unstable system, no matter of the voltage selected (1.2V or 1.25V). Surprisingly, we found out that the Micron ICs on these modules do not really enjoy an increased voltage versus stock, since at 1.1V we could boot to Windows but TM5 testing got us errors, but at 1.2V or 1.25V, while retaining the exact same timings, the system did not boot at all!

Conclusive Thoughts

The Crucial Pro 96GB kit is not a kit designed for overclocking and insanely low timings, but it is more oriented towards capacity in order to allow usage of multiple RAM-consuming processes at once such as virtual machines or for editing large video projects. You can be sure that by installing such a kit you will benefit from complete system stability, for both AMD and Intel platforms and you also have the choice of running two different profiles.

Depending on the motherboard, especially if you are running on an Intel system, each XMP profile does have multiple timings defined for the same running speed, so the system can fall back on another configuration.

The Crucial Pro 96GB kit does come with integrated low-profile heatsinks, but considering the low voltage these were designed to run at, the modules do barely get warm, even during intense workloads.

We were able to squeeze a bit extra performance by using C42 timings and the stock voltage and raising the frequency to 6000MHz, so all good!

The kit can be found at the moment with a consistent discount on Amazon.de, for just about 247 Euros!
