click image for close-upIn 1878, Henry M. Stanley (of Stanley and Livingstone fame) published Through a Dark Continent, an account of his expedition that crossed the African continent. The Boy Travellers on the Congo, written by Thomas Wallace Knox and published in 1888, is an adaptation of Stanley's book. Knox's version made use of existing illustrations, includingSlave Offered in the Market. The woodcut accompanies a description of Nyangwe, a village in present-day Zaire where Arabs traded. . .
"One of the principal institutions at Nyangwe is the kituka, or the market. . . . In the market everything becomes vendible and purchasable from an ordinary earthenware pot to a slave. . . . How like any other marketplace it was!"
