Q: Let's talk about the origins of the South Carolina colony and how it was begun and why; what were the motives behind it?

A: South Carolina was started as the colony of a colony. Barbados had become over-populated with the younger sons of English merchants and with their slaves. And in both cases they began to look around, cast around for new places. Unlike Virginia they brought a fully conceived idea of slavery. Virginia had gone through a period of trying to decide what to do with these people and improvising and groping towards a system of slavery. But the Barbadians came to South Carolina with a fully developed idea and system of slavery.
