Unconvinced about the long-term benefits of investing in stocks? Yes, stock returns are volatile. But nearly a century of bull and bear markets shows that the good times have outshone the bad. Volatility is the price long-term investors pay for the returns they get. Take the S&P 500: ↳ From 1926 to June 2023, the index experienced 18 bear markets, or a fall of at least 20% from a previous peak, ranging from -21% to -80% across an average length of 10 months. ↳ On the upside, there were 19 bull markets, or gains of at least 20% from a previous trough. They averaged 52 months in length, and advances ranged from 21% to 936%. When bull and bear markets are viewed together, it’s clear stocks have rewarded disciplined investors. We give you permission to stop 👇 While admirable (you want to protect your hard-earned money after all), this habit may end up being counter-productive. Assuming your portfolio consists mainly of global equities (shares in the great companies of the world), with a small allocation to bonds and cash, mainly for monthly cashflow purposes... It will provide the returns you need in the LONG TERM. (Even with regular, but always temporary, declines in value.) This "volatility", is the price of admission for mature, long-term investors. Don't focus on the short term, or react to current events. You're only hurting your future self. The less you look, the better returns you’ll get, and certainly the better you’ll feel emotionally.

The size of a country doesn't always tell you much about its investment potential and looking just at land mass can lead you astray. If you're only comparing countries based on things like population, GDP or exports, you're not getting a true indication of the size or suitability of investments in a market. This chart gives you a different view. It shows the world's equity markets, but the size of each country has been adjusted to match its total market cap. Of course, the world's in motion, so these proportions can shift over time. But seeing things this way helps you think about diversification in a new light.
