A temporary 'mini-moon' for Earth 🌎 Starting today, September 29th, to November 2024, Earth will temporarily capture a small asteroid, 2024 PT5, turning it into a ‘mini-moon.’ This means the asteroid will get caught in Earth’s gravity and orbit around us for about two months before it drifts back into space. It won’t complete a full circle around Earth, but it’s still an exciting event! These mini-moons are rare and show us how objects from space interact with our planet. 2024 PT5 will be back near Earth in 2055! On February 28th, 1928, within the modest laboratories of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata (then Calcutta), Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman made a discovery that would forever change our understanding of light. While meticulously studying light scattering, he observed that a minuscule portion of the scattered light altered its wavelength. This transformative phenomenon became known as the Raman Effect. The Raman Effect provided a powerful tool for analyzing the composition and structure of molecules. Imagine it like a unique fingerprint that light leaves on a molecule! This discovery transformed fields like chemistry, materials science, and even medicine. Two years later, in 1930, Raman's remarkable discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics. He became the first Asian and non-white individual to receive the Nobel in any scientific category. In honour of this monumental achievement, India celebrates National Science Day each year on February 28th. It's a day to promote scientific awareness, celebrate achievements, and inspire the next generation of innovators.
