This perspective aligns well with the Wheel of Life concept - a tool that encourages a balanced approach to personal satisfaction. The Wheel of Life typically includes 8-10 life areas, with work being just one segment (however, one can choose whichever areas to focus on.) This visual representation reminds us that our jobs, while important, are only one aspect of a fulfilling life. By using this tool, we can: * 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: See how work fits into the bigger picture of our lives, rather than dominating it. * 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Recognize if we're over-emphasising career at the expense of other areas. * 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬: Develop objectives that encompass all life aspects, not just professional ones. * 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬: Regularly reassess our satisfaction across all areas, adjusting as needed. * 𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Build multiple "contingencies of self-worth" as the article suggests, to buffer against work-related stress. By using the Wheel of Life, we can cultivate the healthy psychological distance from work that the article advocates, potentially leading to a more sustainable and satisfying career approach. Using the Wheel of Life can be very beneficial in assessing and improving various aspects of business life, both at the individual and team level, as well as in one’s personal life, as it provides a holistic perspective on where the balance or imbalance lies in the different segments it's been tasked to represent.

The Wheel of Life is an effective and flexible self-assessment tool that can be customised with various categories to suit one’s individual needs, from career and finances to health and relationships. It's used in different ways to gain insights into life balance and personal satisfaction. What does your current Wheel of Life look like for you?

Many of you have indicated considering a career change, judging from the results of the various polls I’ve recently put up. Are you familiar with the Wheel of Life? It’s something I cover in my career transition coaching sessions with my clients. Originally created by Paul J. Meyer (the founder of Success Motivation Institute, Inc.) in the 1960s, it was designed as a simple yet effective visual tool to assess various aspects of an individual's life. Its primary purpose is to provide a snapshot of a person's current life satisfaction across different areas, helping them identify imbalances and set goals for improvement. Its aim is to help people realise their goals and achieve a more balanced, fulfilling life. The Wheel of Life remains widely used today partly due to its: * Simplicity and flexibility * Visual representation * Goal-setting aid * Versatility * Progress tracking It also remains relevant because it addresses the ongoing challenge of maintaining balance in an increasingly complex and demanding world. EXERCISE:  Identify your current position in relation to the life areas and what your desired life balance would look like. What do you see? Imagine a world in which a half-assed tool created by second-tier developers harms your company's most crucial supply chain: talent. Nothing you need to imagine. It has been happening in recruiting, with platforms auto-handling applications and resumes. I have been on both sides of this cat-and-mouse game in the last five years (not seeing great candidates because of auto-filters; or realizing that my resume is too designed to make it past any of these robots). It is baffling that companies let their HR use this tech instead of doing their job.
