This is what early-stage founders need to know about fundraising in the Middle East & GCC. Here’s the reality: fundraising in the GCC is a different beast compared to fundraising in the US or Europe. I just moderated a killer panel with Mulham Kabra and Rohin Sethi. Here are the key takeaways for anyone looking to fundraise in the region. Traditional, Risk-Averse Investors: In the GCC, investors are more cautious. They’re used to low-risk, high-predictability models like real estate. So, if you’re pitching a startup, especially in the early stages, you’ll need to really de-risk your proposition. Show why your business is a solid bet. Valuation Guesswork: At the pre-seed stage, valuations can feel like a shot in the dark—especially in the GCC, where benchmarks aren’t as established. Look to similar companies in your region and globally, but remember: valuation is as much an art as it is a science at this stage. Be flexible, but make sure you’ve done your homework. Speed Kills (in a Good Way): The process is slower in the GCC—eight months to close a round isn’t unheard of. Stay patient, build relationships, and be prepared to prove yourself over time. Momentum is your best friend. Network is Everything: Start with your warm network and industry insiders. Introductions and soft referrals are still the most powerful tools in your fundraising arsenal. You don’t need to know everyone—but the right intro can open doors that cold outreach won’t. Be Trend-Savvy: Right now, AI is the buzzword everywhere. Investors follow trends, so be aware of how you can weave the latest tech narrative into your pitch. But don’t just follow the crowd—have a real, compelling story that backs up why you're incorporating these elements.
