Great to see HOK’s Keith Hui on the cover of ACE Update magazine all about airport design! Airports act as mini cities and designing them can be complex. Keith shares how HOK collaborates with airport clients to focus on their current and future needs to create flexible, sustainable and beautiful airport designs. The designs should also create a strong sense of place, like the exposed timber used within the Concourse D Annex at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest, or the ‘OKConnected’ mosaic at the Will Rogers World Airport Terminal Expansion in Oklahoma. Keith also discusses HOK’s high-performance, transformative airport designs, like the new energy-efficient passenger terminal at Salt Lake City International Airport, and the unique phasing and design of LaGuardia Airport’s new Terminal B that slashed the building schedule by almost two years and saved millions of dollars. 👀 Have you seen the Grady Health System Correll Pavilion featured in Archello? Designed by HOK, the 10-story ambulatory surgical and outpatient facility in Atlanta is Grady Health's largest capital investment in 30 years and expands its clinical capacity by 45% and operating rooms by 25%. The design emphasizes patient-centered care, incorporating elements that support physical, emotional and spiritual healing. The flexible layout allows it to adapt to advancements in medicine, technology and market demands. With the 2024 hurricane season underway, NBC2 Fort Myers sat down with HOK's Jonathan Rae to discuss resilient design and how the city's Luminary Hotel was able to withstand Hurricane Ian. “We purposely avoided alcoves, recesses, those types of things,” Rae told NBC2's Evan Dean. “The resiliency is so that the building can not only perform in the hurricane but recover from it afterward.” Left unanswered in the interview: Where did Jonathan get those socks?! 😂 #resilientdesign #hurricanes #climatechange #bobross

𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞...? 🤣 😍 We love the title of this Work Design Magazine video series on the state of the office in an era of hybrid and remote work. More than that, we love Kay Sargent's in-depth analysis! Below: Check out Kay's discussion in Part 1 of the series and read 3 key takeaways. 📺 watch Kay's discussion: https://bit.ly/3yKEIks 👓 read 3 key takeaways: + Companies looking to transform their workplaces should reflect on their organizational DNA. What are your office demographics? What are your regional influences, and what does your corporate culture look like? These are a few questions to consider. + Hybrid is hard. It is more of an operational model than a workplace solution and requires strong policies and procedures in place be successful. + Sights, sounds, smells and temperature all impact how we work – what’s annoying for one person may be debilitating for another. It’s important to embrace the science of design to create neuro-inclusive spaces that help people thrive and do their best work. #workplacestrategy #officedesign #workplace

When it comes to lab design, there's no such thing as "good vibrations." Even the slightest building movement can disrupt sensitive lab equipment. In designing Emory University's new Health Research Science Building II, our designers worked to mitigate vibration from three key sources: 1. Site vibration: The site lies near a rail line. To reduce vibration from passing trains, the team added extra massing to the slab nearest the line. Working with a vibration/acoustic consultant, we fine-tuned the necessary amount of massing without requiring an undue volume of concrete. 2. Wind vibration: The team studied how external building elements (such as trellis structures) responded to wind and chose materials that minimized resonance and flutter. 3. Pedestrian vibrations: Parametric optimization studies helped the team reduce floor movement by revealing an appropriate balance of structural depth, MEP service depth, and location-specific vibration performance. Perhaps counterintuitively, connecting the 20-foot cantilevered stairs to 15 70-foot-long pedestrian bridges improved the bridges’ vibration performance! #labdesign #vibrationcontrol #sorrybeachboys #emoryuniversity
