One of the greatest strengths of Intercultural Agility is the mastery of Perception Management: The idea of slowing down, creating space, and even rewiring your brain in the way it perceives self, others, relationships, and the context in which a given relationship exists. As humans, we aren’t often trained intentionally on how to ‘perceive’. Rather, it’s something that happens organically when we’re young and living in our home cultural context. We learn to look for certain cues, such as intonation, gestures, word choice, body language, etc. and then associate meaning to them, to which we then respond accordingly. While this is the perfectly natural result of a homogenous community that practices cultural norms, it doesn’t set a person up for success on the global stage. More than 100 languages and 100 cultures within one nationality. Ethiopia is a country with multiple stories, one of them is internal problems between culturally different groups, another one is a country with enormous potential and great people. Our KnowledgeWorkx Global Partner Arjen Brussé recently conducted an inspiring intercultural training at YEP Ethiopia and shared: “It was inspiring to be with ambitious young professionals in a country with so much local cultural diversity. It was really rewarding to turn on the cultural spotlight and to see how the trainees start to recognize and understand many intercultural interactions in their lives. The multitude of cultures inside Ethiopia mean cultural agility is an essential skill to navigate all the cultural challenges inside the country as well as the relationships with suppliers, stakeholders and clients from other cultures.” The students that went through the training shared about it: 🗣 “This is very useful for inside our country already. Our internal trouble is highly related to lack of cultural awareness and lack of cultural intelligence.” 🗣 “I never thought about different cultural worldviews before this training.” 🗣 “Intercultural training needs to be part of the curriculum. It is highly relevant to understand and improve our intercultural business.”

Culture is all around us. It is the lens through which we see the world. Which means more often than not, we don't see it head-on. Instead, we see its impact. So, how can we create organizational cultures where everyone can recognize and choose the parts of their culture they want to bring with them into the organizational culture? Intercultural Agility tools such as the 12 Dimensions of Culture will give your employees and coworkers neutral language as they navigate issues of culture and diversity. This neutral language is common ground and gives everyone equal, solid footing, opening pathways for healthy, engaged, understanding conversations. https://lnkd.in/gA-8UZZr
