Carbon Capture and Storage System: 🔍 CO2 capture and storage is technologically feasible and could play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the course of this century. In 1977, the Italian physicist Cesare Marchetti proposed that CCS technology could be used to reduce emissions from coal power plants and fuel refineries. ⚡ The first large-scale CO2 capture and injection project with dedicated CO2 storage and monitoring was commissioned at the Sleipner offshore gas field in Norway in 1996. As of 2023, around 45 commercial CCS facilities are operational 🔆The role of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in climate change mitigation has been a topic of debate for over two decades. In India however, this technology is far from becoming mainstream, but the Government of India and the Indian industry are trying to better understand the techno-economic feasibility and scalability of this technology. 💥As part of Mission Innovation (MI), India is collaborating with 24-member countries and the European Union (EU) to deliver innovation challenges. CCUS has started gaining momentum across industrial sectors in India. Heavy industries such as National Aluminium Company (NALCO), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) are initiating the process of setting up the CCUS facilities.
