During his visit to the IMF in Washington, Ahmed Abdelaal, Group CEO of Mashreq, engaged in a powerful discussion with Lara Habib from Al Arabiya on economic growth prospects amid geopolitical tensions and their impact on global economic trends, particularly commodity prices. Despite global uncertainties, the Gulf region, led by the UAE, continues to attract strong foreign investment and shows robust economic performance, reinforcing confidence in its economic systems. Abdelaal also highlighted the evolving challenges for banks, especially with falling interest rates. While this presents potential risks, lower rates can spur economic growth and attract investors. Mashreq is strategically addressing these shifts by increasing its non-interest income, currently at 40-45% of its operating profits, through initiatives in digital transformation and wealth management. Moreover, Abdelaal underscored Mashreq’s expanding international presence, with a focus on supporting trade across key regions, notably India and Egypt.
