Ammonia: A Key to Unlocking the UK's Hydrogen Economy? 🔑 This feasibility study, produced by Siemens, ENGIE, Ecuity, and the Science & Technology Facilities Council, makes a strong case as a reference for ammonia as a crucial enabler for the UK's hydrogen economy. Key Findings: 📚Decentralized Cracking Wins: Transporting ammonia and cracking it on-site at the point of use is more economically favorable than centralized cracking and hydrogen distribution. 📚Competitive Green Hydrogen: Using ammonia as a carrier for hydrogen offers a competitive cost advantage compared to other transportation methods or on-site production. They estimate green hydrogen delivery at £141.71/MWh (£4.72/kg). 📚Technology Breakthrough: The study demonstrates a new ammonia cracking technology with high-purity hydrogen output (99.9975%) and an efficient commercial-scale system design. 📚Mature Storage Solution: Existing infrastructure for storing LPG can be readily adapted for ammonia, offering large-scale storage capacity (a single tank can hold ~0.5 TWh of liquid ammonia). 📚Unlocking Global Renewables: Importing green hydrogen in the form of ammonia from regions with abundant low-cost renewable energy could be more cost-effective than producing it domestically in the UK. The report emphasizes: ☑Lithium Imide Catalyst: This technology has the potential to significantly improve the economics of ammonia decomposition, reducing the required conversion temperature by ~50°C. ☑Pilot Project Progress: Designs for both large-scale (200 kg/day ) and small-scale ammonia crackers have been developed for further development and testing. Overall, this study highlights ammonia's potential to overcome key barriers to hydrogen adoption, including storage, transportation costs, and local renewable resource constraints. By providing a cost-effective and practical pathway for a green hydrogen supply chain, ammonia could be a game-changer for the UK's decarbonization goals. What are your thoughts on the potential for ammonia to accelerate the hydrogen transition in the UK and beyond? 🔬 Here are some takeaways about this comprehensive report titled "Manual - Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) Calculator" by the European Hydrogen Observatory. This report provides valuable insights into the cost analysis of hydrogen production in Europe using low-temperature electrolysis. 1️⃣ LCOH Concept: The report explains the concept of Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), which evaluates the total expenses involved in producing hydrogen throughout its lifecycle, including both capital and operational costs. 2️⃣ LCOH Calculator: The manual demonstrates how the LCOH calculator can be used to estimate the expenses associated with hydrogen production in Europe. It covers different use cases, such as the effect of country, electricity source, electrolysis technology, and more. 3️⃣ Use Cases: The report showcases several use cases to demonstrate the functionality of the LCOH calculator. It compares the cost effectiveness of different countries, electricity sources, electrolysis technologies, and even the combined effect of country and electricity source. 📢 Use Case 1: The report compares the cost-effectiveness of hydrogen production using wholesale electricity and alkaline electrolysis technology in Germany and Norway. It shows that Norway has a lower LCOH in this scenario. 📢 Use Case 2: It examines the most cost-effective electricity source for hydrogen production using alkaline electrolysis in Spain. The results indicate that photovoltaic (PV) has a lower LCOH compared to wholesale electricity. 📢 Use Case 3: The combined effect of country and electricity source is analyzed. It compares hydrogen production in Malta with PV and Ireland with onshore wind. The findings reveal that Ireland with onshore wind has a lower LCOH. 📢 Use Case 4: The report evaluates the cost-effectiveness of different electrolysis technologies (alkaline vs. PEM) when using wholesale electricity in Germany. It shows that alkaline electrolysis has a lower LCOH. #HydrogenProduction #LCOH #SustainableEnergy #RenewableHydrogen #EnergyTransition #Decarbonization
