At Page, our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity goes beyond merely meeting ADA requirements, and our design approach is enriched by the personal experiences of team. In our blog, Page Marketing Strategist Briana Carter, CPSM describes how challenges with a baby stroller shaped her thinking on accessibility; Project Manager Rebekah Bellum shares how, during an ADA-focused seminar, her architectural perspective shifted by watching differently-abled people navigate mock spaces such as ramps, toilet facilities, turn spaces, and entrances; and Architect Tyler Thompson, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP reveals how experiencing a stroke intensified his understanding of what it feels like to do things so many of us take for granted: from opening a door to finding alternatives when an elevator is broken. Inspired by personal experiences and informed by ongoing education, our teams push the boundaries of what accessible design can achieve. Buildings have historically been designed to prescriptive requirements with respect to applied wind pressures, leading to structural frames which are often larger and stiffer than necessary. There is now a path to a more targeted and efficient approach using Performance-Based Wind Design (PBWD), says Page Senior Project Architect Cory Boden. “As architects, typically we’re the ones badgering the engineer to reduce structural member sizes. Very rarely does that conversation go the other way. And yet, that’s what happened at 321 West 6th Street in Austin, Texas – the first tower in the world to be constructed under the new pre-standards for Performance-Based Wind Design.” An invited panelist for the international Zak World of Façades conference, a one-day global symposium on façade design & engineering, Cory joined project partners Cynthia Bowden, Sean Clifton, and James Hakes, to share insights and lessons learned from the pioneering use of PBWD and its implications for tall building design around the world. The new, 57-floor, mixed-used building has been awarded the 2024 Charles J. Pankow Award for Innovation from the American Society of Civil Engineers. “As the Executive Architect for our clients Tishman Speyer and Ryan Companies US, Inc., working with structural engineering firm Magnusson Klemencic Associates and partner architect Handel Architects, the project team was able to realize significant reductions in concrete and steel as well as reductions in structural member sizes,” Cory explains. “This design process allowed for us to reduce the total concrete volume of the structure by 5%, slim the core walls by 6”, and more than halve the required reinforcing steel which resulted in a trifecta of savings in embodied carbon, floor area, and cost.” #PerformanceBasedWindDesign #TallBuildingDesign #StructuralEngineering Images: Tishman Speyer and Handel Architects

Have you ever heard of dichroic windows? At the University of Maryland’s E.A. Fernandez IDEA (Innovate, Design and Engineer for America) Factory, we utilized dynamic dichroic glass, creating vivid color changes according to viewing angles and sunlight conditions. The result? Interiors flooded with pink and yellow hues that imbue a sense of imaginative fluidity. And, outside the building, an exterior beacon of color reflects green and blue hues during the day and glows pink at night – signaling the dynamics of engineering innovation to the campus. 📸: Barry Halkin #ThinkWhatsPossible #DesignLed #AcademicDesign #Engineering #Innovation #DichroicGlass xFoundry@UMD

"Innovation is not always a structured process,” writes Page Principal + Healthcare Planning Director Mark Vaughan. “Creativity and collaboration thrive in the spontaneity of informal conversations, chance encounters, and the exploration of nature. As academic medical centers continue to push the boundaries of medical knowledge in laboratories and lecture halls, planners and designers should embrace the potential for discovery in unexpected places. “Public and private spaces should contain synapses—intersecting points that can create intentional opportunities for meaningful conversations. These are places people want to go during their normal routines to grab coffee, eat lunch, take a break outside, or walk along a familiar track."
