Earlier this year, the MBZ Fund entered a three-year partnership with Dolphin Energy to enhance the Chairman’s Award within our Small Grants Programme, focusing on supporting endangered flora and fauna. The projects chosen by our Advisory Board are selected based on their impact, scalability, contributions to species programs, and career development opportunities. We place a strong emphasis on essential conservation skills, such as community engagement and stakeholder collaboration. Thanks to the generous support from Dolphin Energy, we have successfully aided the Bermuda Petrel through The Nonsuch Expeditions, the Lebanon Iris via the Biodiversity Conservation Initiative, and Axolotl (Mexico) in partnership with Dr Felipe Osuna during our most recent round of funding. Thank you to Dolphin Energy for your invaluable contribution to species conservation! #MBZFund #conservation #endangeredspecies #wildlifeconservation #birds #plants #amphibian #communityengagement #stakeholdercollaboration #biodiversity #sustainability #uae #mexico #bermuda #lebanon #animals #plants #fungi #wildlife #nature Rhea Kahale Jean-Pierre Rouja

Over the past three years, thirteen African manatee researchers in Guinea have been trained by Lucy Keith Diagne from the African Aquatic Conservation Fund, supported by the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund. Their mission? To identify and address all threats to the African manatee within West Africa. In the inaugural episode of Radio Environnement new series, coastal researcher Cece Noel Kpoghomou discusses the critical issue of mangrove destruction and its far-reaching impacts on both manatees and local communities. Stay tuned for future episodes, where we’ll dive deeper into the challenges and conservation efforts surrounding manatees in Guinea’s interior rivers. We are proud to support the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) and their Brazilian partner, ONG Aquasis, in their vital efforts to restore the endangered, Gray-breasted Parakeet in the protected Serra das Almas Forest Reserve in Brazil. Since 2010, their innovative nest box program in the Baturité Mountains has led to a remarkable population increase over the past six years. Once reduced to fewer than 100 individuals due to deforestation and the European pet trade, this species was listed as Critically Endangered in 2007. To prevent extinction, the team is translocating individuals to re-establish local populations in their historical range. With the support of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, they are now leveraging their insights to create a third safeguarded population in the Serra das Almas Forest Reserve, which spans 4,750 hectares of protected forest. Excellent work and a great example of collaboration to make a significant difference! #MBZFund #Conservation #birds #GrayBreastedParakeet #collaboration #partnership #Brazil #AmericanBirdConservancy #Aquasis #Biodiversity #protectedareas #nature #sustainability

The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund is committed to amphibian conservation worldwide, recognizing the vital role of frogs, salamanders, and caecilians as keystone species and indicators of ecosystem health. These remarkable creatures are essential for transferring energy within ecosystems and controlling insect populations, contributing significantly to agricultural stability and public health. As sentinel species, amphibians are highly sensitive to environmental changes, serving as key indicators of ecosystem stability. When they face threats, it signals that the entire ecosystem is at risk. Over the past 15 years, the MBZ Fund has awarded 280 grants totaling over $2.2 million to support the conservation of threatened amphibian species globally. Some initiatives include the Starry Night Toad project, which guides the indigenous Achuaco community in Sogrome, Colombia; the work of Masters student Wendy Bolaños on the smallest amphibian in the world in Brazil; and the Tlaloc Conservation initiative within the Costa Rica Wildlife Foundation, aimed at preserving the only known population of a newly discovered frog species. These are just a few examples of the impactful work supported by the MBZ Fund. “Amphibians occupy restricted habitat niches and ranges, making them particularly vulnerable, but also ensuring that small grants can have a significant impact," said Nicolas Heard, Acting Director General of the MBZ Fund. Together, we can make a difference for these ancient and essential species! This morning, Nicolas Heard and Conrad Harley from the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund had the privilege of attending an inspiring and insightful talk on “The Future of Philanthropy.” Part of the Knowledge Seminar Series, the event was hosted by the Office of Development Affairs at the stylish Warehouse 421. The standout speaker was Dr. Una Osili, a renowned expert in economic and financial development, philanthropy, and social innovation. Her presentation, aptly titled “Phil-Anthro-Metrics” (Phil = love and Anthro = human), provided valuable data insights and compelling real-life examples of the evolving landscape of global philanthropy. It was fascinating to explore the diverse sources of philanthropy, how they have evolved and how funders are preparing to tackle tomorrow’s challenges. The networking session was fantastic, packed with takeaways and expertly delivered. Truly inspiring! #mbzfund #future #philanthropy #metrics #data #network #seminar #funders #love #financialdevelopment #socialinnovation #inspirational #motivational

It has been two years since the passing of Gustavo Fonseca, the GEF’s long-serving Director of Programs. His legacy lives on through the Fonseca Leadership Program, which continues his mission to support the next generation of conservationists.🌍💚 The Fonseca Leadership Program builds on key partnerships to address the needs of conservation professionals from developing countries. It empowers future leaders to drive impactful conservation efforts through fellowships, grants, awards & networking opportunities. In Brazil and the Amazon, we honor his commitment through partnerships with Wildlife Conservation Network’s Amazonia Rising Conservation Leaders program and Funbio - Fundo Brasileiro para a Biodiversidade’s research support program. These initiatives focus on conservation training in a region Gustavo deeply cared about. 🌳🇧🇷 Our collaboration with WWF’s Education for Nature program extends fellowship support to young conservationists across Latin America, continuing Gustavo’s legacy of nurturing future leaders in the region. In sub-Saharan Africa, the GEF-Wildlife Conservation Society partnership offers fellowships with a focus on tropical Africa, leveraging their specialized expertise to support conservation efforts. For southern and East Africa, our partnership through the Stellenbosch University in South Africa emphasizes community-based natural resource management.
