Javier Garcia Ruiz Journey to Everest Base Camp: From High Executive to High Altitude Adventures Javi never thought trekking would become part of his life. Having spent his youth playing football and still competing in weekly matches, his idea of pushing limits had always been on the field or in the business world. So, when the opportunity to trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) came up last-minute, he jumped at the chance—but with no expectations. “I had no hiking experience. I bought all my gear just days before we left. It was a leap into the unknown,” Javi recalls. “I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I wanted to push myself.” The journey began with a flight into Lukla, famously one of the most exhilarating airports in the world. From there, Javi quickly realized that the trek was no walk in the park. The trail passed through Namche Bazaar, the heart of Sherpa culture and the gateway to the Himalayas at 3,440 meters. “Namche was the first time I felt the altitude. You can be fit, but this was a different challenge,” Javi shared. Reaching Everest Base Camp, at 5,364 meters (17,598 ft), requires strength and determination, even for someone as active as Javi. The trek covers roughly 130 kilometers round-trip and, while not technically demanding, the high altitude makes every step harder. “I had never felt anything like it. The air is thinner, every breath feels like work, and there were moments where I thought, ‘Can I actually do this?’ One of the most difficult parts of the journey came at Lobuche, a high-altitude village just before Base Camp. “I had headaches, felt tired all the time. The altitude hits you hard, but I wasn’t going to turn back. I knew I had to push through.” What surprised Javi the most, however, was how much he enjoyed the journey itself. Passing through the incredible landscapes of Sagarmatha National Park was something he hadn’t expected. “The scenery was unbelievable—massive mountains, snow-covered paths, and these tiny villages that seem like they belong to another world. It really humbles you.” The highlight, of course, was reaching Everest Base Camp and having the chance to sleep there, hearing the ice cracking surrounded by the iconic Khumbu Icefall and towering peaks “It wasn’t just about making it to Base Camp—it was about everything I’d experienced along the way. The people, the culture, the challenge. It’s something I’ll never forget.” Javi’s journey to Everest Base Camp is a proof of determination “I went into this with no expectations, and I came out with the experience of a lifetime,” Javi says with a smile.

5,000-meter Peaks for Beginners: Where to start For those eager to test themselves at altitude, 5,000-meter peaks offer a rewarding adventure without the need for extensive technical skills. These mountains are ideal for trekkers looking to prepare both physically and mentally for bigger challenges, providing a solid foundation in high-altitude trekking while offering the chance to explore some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes. Here are four peaks that serve as the perfect introduction to the world of mountaineering: Mount Ararat (Turkey) – 5,137m Mount Ararat is pretty straightforward—no technical skills needed, just a good sense of adventure. The views are definitely worth it, with sweeping sights of Turkey, Iran and Armenia, and Little Ararat glowing in the sunrise. It’s a perfect way to get a feel for high-altitude trekking, especially if you’re new to it but still want a rewarding challenge without the heavy technical demands. Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) – 5,895m Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, doesn’t require any technical climbing, but you’ll need solid stamina and good acclimatization to handle the altitude. The trek takes you through some incredible, ever-changing ecosystems, and the iconic summit is something you won’t forget. It’s a fantastic way to train if you’re thinking about tackling higher, tougher mountains down the line. Mount Elbrus (Russia) – 5,642m The rooftop of Europe, Elbrus offers a relatively easy ascent with basic equipment, though altitude and weather can present challenges. It’s a great opportunity to push yourself at altitude and learning basic mountaineering skills while preparing for more technical climbs. Sitting on the rooftop of Europe. You’ll be trekking through alpine terrain, and the views from the summit, looking over the sprawling Caucasus Mountains, are incredible. Mount Kazbek (Georgia) – 5,033m It might not be as well-known as some other peaks, but that’s part of its charm. This stunning peak offers a unique combination of adventure and culture, making it perfect for those looking for something off the beaten path. The climb itself requires some basic glacier travel. Each of these peaks serves as an ideal starting point for those looking to push their limits in the mountains. Whether you’re testing yourself at altitude for the first time or training for bigger goals, these adventures provide the perfect balance of challenge and preparation. At Thin Air, we offer guided expeditions to all these incredible mountains, helping you achieve your goals while staying safe and supported throughout the journey. Ready to take the first step?
