There is a lot that you know about me (thanks, social media!). I'm the Owner of Second Nature Family Health & Wellness Centre, I'm an international public speaker, I’m a Registered Early Childhood Educator and a I’m therapist. This experience has obviously helped me immensely in achieving my dreams. However, there is one thing that you may not know about me. I was a stay-at-home parent and educator for my children for six years. For some of you, this revelation needs no explanation. For those just getting to know me, this may come as a surprise. You see, my strength comes from my struggle. After having my firstborn, our family was met with challenges. Challenges in finding care for a toddler that bit, for a threenager that struggled to communicate, and for a school-ager that didn't fit the definition of a "good student". Our community fell away. Society fell away. And I was left to wear the hats of supportive parent, educator, occupational therapist, speech therapist, nurse, social worker...and it was 24/7. So I stayed home. And I built an educational island where my kids could be accepted for who they were and where there would be no limitations placed upon them. That’s what parents do. During the pandemic, I offered educational pods, and I even tried to open up a childcare centre myself. My grief in not being able to be everything, to do everything, without support, fueled a fire inside of me to create a space for children like my own. So I worked, and I built Second Nature from the ground up. Imagine a space that accepts your child, just as they are. Imagine a space where your child is free to explore, that provides a safe space for your child to take a breath when they need to, and that provides open arms to catch them when they fall. It started with the intention of wanting to do my part to provide preventative education related to infant mortality. Safe sleep was the foundation. Which started with “Safe Sleep Sage” simulator to do community teaching. Since then, the vision has evolved into a whole culturally sensitive, harm reduction focused comprehensive 2 tiered program!! What does “comprehensive” entail??? - Safe Sleep Education with a harm-reduction focus. - Period of PURPLE Cry Education. - Abuse Head Trauma/Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Education. - Stress, Anxiety, Depression, and Parenting Session with Dr. Octavia Manuel-Wright, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, AGPCNP-BC Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. - Infant CPR training. - Hands-On activities. - Creating Proactive Plans to support risk reduction. Tier 1 is a COMMUNITY-BASED DOULA referred program for parents/caregivers who are identified as high-risk based on risk factor criterias. In collaboration with thier doulas, will receive closer monitoring and support. Tier 2 is COMMUNITY EDUCATION for focused audiences. Months of learning and developing, redeveloping, redeveloping, and redeveloping finally at a ready to launch point! Program promotion starts in March with both Tier 1 Community-Base Doula Referred Pilot group and Tier 2 Community Education starting in April! We are currently looking for community partners to support this much needed program in our community! Education is empowerment. Providing quality education to families is one of the greatest gifts we can give. As a postpartum doula and child life specialist, this is a major part of my work. There is sometimes such an information overload, and families are flooded by well-meaning but sometimes harmful "opinions". Having a support system in your corner that can provide you with high-level, evidence-based research to assist you in making the decisions that feel right for you and your family can make a huge difference. Receiving appropriate information before and during stressful experiences has been shown to greatly reduce fear and anxiety. It is empowering to equip yourself with the tools you need to make the call that feels good for you and to feel prepared for the tasks ahead. Remember, even when you have an educator in your corner, YOU are the expert on what is right for your family. YOU are the perfect person to be parenting your child.
