This Week's Debate Topic: National Identity in Afghanistan National identity is a subjective concept that reflects an individual's belonging to a particular national group. It is accompanied by a complex set of conditions and emotions that shape one’s attitude towards their own group and others. In Afghanistan, national identity has always been a highly sensitive political and cultural issue. The linguistic, ethnic, cultural, and religious differences within Afghanistan, along with cultural and ethnic similarities with neighboring countries, as well as decades of war, conflict, and destruction, have hindered the full formation of a national identity in the country. The debate over whether the identity of Afghan citizens should be "Afghan" has persisted for years. In recent years, discussions around this issue, particularly concerning the Civil Registration Law, have sparked further controversy. Opponents argue that this identity cannot be generalized to non-Pashtuns, while proponents claim that with the country's name as "Afghanistan" and the legal provisions supporting it, the foundation for accepting it as a "national identity" has been established. To encourage further discussion on this issue among Afghan youth, the 'Youth for Youth' platform has dedicated this week's 'Debate Club' session to the topic of "National Identity in Afghanistan." Topic of this week's debate: The Role of Religion in Afghanistan's Politics Religion in Afghanistan is not only a matter of personal belief but also a fundamental pillar in shaping the national and social identity of its people. A significant portion of Afghanistan’s laws is based on Islamic principles, and Sharia law is recognized as the primary source of legal authority in the country. However, the prominent role of religion in Afghan politics has also faced challenges. Differences among Islamic groups, ethnic and sectarian tensions, and external influences have at times led to political instability. For this reason, some political scientists argue for the necessity of separating religion from politics. To further explore this topic among Afghan youth, the "Youth for Youth" platform has dedicated this week's session of the "Debate Club" to the discussion of the "Role of Religion in Afghanistan's Politics." Smart Politics: A Gateway to the Mysterious World of Politics - An Exclusive, Free, and Online Workshop Following our wide-ranging academic and social activities, and considering the importance of politics, its comprehensive nature, and broad applicability in the modern era, we are pleased to announce that we successfully organized a specialized workshop titled "Smart Politics: A Gateway to the Mysterious World of Politics" from May 9 to June 21, 2024. As an online platform continuously working towards enhancing capacity, expanding knowledge, and building meaningful networks among the youth and women of Afghanistan, we had the honor of bringing together specialists and enthusiasts in the fields of politics and international relations from various ethnicities and regions across Afghanistan for this nationwide, free, online, and specialized workshop. The workshop, consisting of eight weekly 120-minute (two hours) online sessions, sustained the full enthusiasm and engagement of the participants throughout. It focused on one of the most relevant and timely topics in political science and international relations, "Smart Politics," exploring its various theoretical and practical aspects in the contemporary era. This educational course was taught by one of the most distinguished professors from the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Kabul University, Zakia Adeli, Ph.D. a PhD in Political Science, Research Fellow at the East-West Center in the United States, and former Deputy Minister for Social Affairs at the Ministry of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
