Two new models of AirPods 4 are believed to be featured in Apple's iPhone 16 event, with both gaining USB-C, improved audio, and one getting a charging case speaker.
Apple has been reported to be mass producing a replacement for the current AirPods 3 since March 2024, and it's previously been expected that a new model would be announced alongside the iPhone 16. According to Bloomberg, Apple will instead launch two versions of the AirPods 4.
The two are to replace both the current AirPods 3, and the older generation AirPods 2 that Apple still sells. Both models will reportedly resemble the current AirPods Pro, will have better audio quality, and come with a USB-C case.
However, the higher-end version's case will include a speaker, said to make it easier to find when using Find My. This version will also feature noise cancellation that is said to match that of the current AirPods Pro.
Apple is said to have discovered and resolved a problem with the new AirPods that saw their batteries draining too quickly. It should not delay the AirPods being launched at the September 9 event.
What is said to be delayed, though, is Apple's hearing health features, codenamed Yodel. These features both turn AirPods into hearing aids, and include hearing test capabilities.
It's possible that the Yodel features will be announced at the iPhone 16 event, but that's not certain as the report cites delays in development. It's possible that they may be introduced later.
Similarly, Apple is said to be preparing an updated AirPods Pro with new design and better noise cancellation. It's expected to be released early in 2025.
Apple is also working on an update to the AirPods Max. While it's not clear when this will be released, it's assumed the update will add a USB-C connector, and the headphones may come in new colors.
Along with the iPhone 16 itself, Apple's "It's Glowtime" event is expected to include AirPods and Apple Watch.
