Many thanks to Gaia Novarino, Professor and Executive Vice President for Science Education at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA), for a highly stimulating talk centered around the study of brain development through the lens of autism spectrum disorders. Our new first year PhD students had many questions and will hopefully also take onboard Gaia Novarino’s valuable advice to consider potential male and female differences in their experiment design and thinking. Many thanks also to Giulio Superti-Furga for hosting.

Giulio Superti-Furga and CeMM members participated at the 18th MedUni Vienna Cancer Research Run #Krebsforschungslauf. Runners can complete as many laps as they like at their own pace on the 1.6-kilometre circuit at the University Campus Altes AKH. Congrats to the CeMM team that contributed 353 km to the charity event! Each year, around 45,000 people in Austria are newly diagnosed with cancer. Donations from runners, partners, and sponsors will go 100 percent toward cancer research projects at the Medical University of Vienna. CeMM Photo Gallery (c) Franzi Kreis: https://bit.ly/4eRIJmE

On 4 October 2024, the CeMM Outing took place. Each year we try to combine social activities with an informative and educational approach. In times of escalating conflicts in the world, we thought it would be important to reflect on Austrian, European and World history, and went to the Vienna Arsenal which houses the Austrian Museum of Military History. We learned that a multi-nation multi-ethnic multi-religion multi-language empire had a detailed military apparatus over centuries, and wanted to understand how it “slipped” into two major global wars. Soon we will also have a S.M.A.R.T. Lecture on "World in pieces. Elections, wars, uncertainties" at CeMM by Ivan Krastev, Chairman of the Centre for Liberal Strategies, Sofia, and Permanent Fellow of the Institute for Human Sciences, IWM Vienna. https://lnkd.in/eVJPreAQ Thank you to the outing organization team, Stefan Bernhardt, Wolfgang Däuble, Andreas Angermayr, Barbara Bachmann and everyone involved. We have a passion for science, and CeMMies work hard. But it is also important to have such team activities to strengthen the CeMM community spirit and appreciate the diversity and super-cooperation mode at our institute! It was again an interesting and joyful event. Photo Gallery CeMM Outing 2024: https://bit.ly/3ZT0NIG

The CeMM community wishes Michael Bronstein and Anita Ender all the best for their future endeavors. "AITHYRA, our new ÖAW sister institute, can be sure of CeMM support & friendly competition. Let’s spur each other on to top performance & sci breakthroughs!", says Giulio Superti-Furga. Welcome AITHYRA, Research Institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence! The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is further expanding its focus on life sciences by opening an institute for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence (AI) based on a € 150 million funding from the German non-profit Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation (BIS). The new institute, called #AITHYRA, will make revolutionary advances in biomedicine by developing AI-based research approaches. It will make a significant contribution to the advancement of human health with the knowledge gained from working with AI. The foundation and OeAW were able to win Michael Bronstein, DeepMind Professor at the University of Oxford, as founding director of the institute. CeMM Admin Director Anita Ender will take over the management of the AITHYRA Institute, and will form a bridge to the medical Campus Vienna. The AITHYRA Institute will be located in a newly constructed building at the Vienna BioCenter (VBC) in Wien-Landstraße. It will benefit from the successful life science environment of university and non-university institutes. Two thirds of the funds required for the housing of the institute will be provided by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research and one third by a grant from the City of Vienna. The Vienna Business Agency has been commissioned to construct a new building as the institute’s final location by the City of Vienna. You can find the press release and follow the development of the institute under www.oeaw.ac.at/aithyra
