The following clip gives an exciting insight into the Aquellum NEOM project - a visionary project that will transform the Red Sea Coast of northwest Saudi Arabia into a futuristic city. Aquellum consists of the Cube, a structure embedded within the mountain cliff and hidden visually from both the sea and the land. 📅 At the end of May this year, Dr. Sauer & Partners' Bethan Haig and Dr Ali Nasekhian, along with Dr Benoit Jones will be delivering an online course for Engineers Ireland entitled "Fundamentals of Soft Ground Tunnelling from Design to Construction". ➡ The purpose of this course is to introduce the concepts and methods of conventional sprayed concrete tunnelling in soft ground to practicing engineers. On Tuesday night, Dr. Sauer & Partners' Stephen Flynn MSc joined the The Pipeline Industries Guild 67th Annual Dinner held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London for a fantastic evening. Huge thanks to Brian Sharkey (OneBore Ltd - Trenchless Solutions Provider - info@onebore.co.uk) and Stephen David Thomas (OGI Groundwater Specialists Ltd) for the invitation. For their first social event of the year, the British Tunnelling Society Young Members' (BTSYM) visited the Transport for London Museum Depot. Situated in Acton, the Depot houses over 320,000 items of all types, including the Museum’s celebrated poster collection, vehicles, signs, models, photographs, engineering drawings and uniforms. Dr. Sauer & Partners was delighted to be able to sponsor the event. The BTSYM group was able to enjoy an out-of-hours tour by the museum’s amazing volunteers - focusing on tunnelling and the underground, leaving the group fascinated with their insider knowledge and historic facts. The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel achieved a significant milestone recently when breakthrough finally happened! TBM, 'Chessie' reached her end destination on Northern Island of the Thimble Shoal Channel after mining more than 6,300 feet. Along the way, the project had to overcome major obstacles such as mining through an old, abandoned ship anchor! Dr. Sauer & Partners served as Engineer of Record for many of the major temporary works designs across the project (working alongside Intecsa for Flatiron Dragados and Schiavone Construction Co. LLC), including the multi-purpose steel trestle that was used to transfer ‘Chessie’ via barge to the artificial island. Gerald and Franz spoke with the North American Editor, Nicole Robinson about the continued demand for tunnelling throughout North America and what this means specifically for conventional methods of excavation and where innovation will help fill the gaps.
