📣The Energy Community Secretariat has just launched its latest CBAM-Readiness Tracker! This report provides key updates on climate and energy progress in the Contracting Parties, covering electricity market integration, renewables, energy efficiency, and carbon pricing developments. With the transitional phase of #CBAM now active, the tracker highlights delays in market coupling, potentially impacting the time-limited exemption for electricity exports to the EU. As of 1 January 2026, EU importers will start paying for carbon emissions embedded in imports, including electricity. The Energy Community is an international organisation which brings together the European Union and its neighbours to create an integrated pan-European energy market. The organisation was founded by the Treaty establishing the Energy Community signed in October 2005 in Athens, Greece, in force since July 2006. The key objective of the Energy Community is to extend the EU internal energy market rules and principles to countries in South East Europe, the Black Sea region and beyond on the basis of a legally binding framework. The Energy Community has nine Contracting Parties - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, North Macedonia, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine. The European Union is a Party to the Energy Community Treaty. Represented by the European Commission, it serves as a permanent Vice-President of the organisation. Any European Union Member State may obtain the status of a Participant. Armenia, Norway and Türkiye take part as Observers.

🙌At the 'Investing for Gender Equality and Inclusive Climate Action'event, organised by the UNDP Istanbul International Center for Private Sector in Development (UNDP ICPSD) Regional Hub and the OECD - OCDE Istanbul Centre, our colleague Marta Schulte-Fischedick kickstarted the discussion on Women’s Leadership for Just Transition and Inclusive Climate Action. 🗝️reflections from the event: 1️⃣ Broadening the definition of "work" – It’s crucial to consider all jobs impacted by transitions, including informal and indirectly affected roles. 2️⃣ Unequal impacts on women – Women face unique challenges in transitions, with less access to resources and decision-making power. 3️⃣ The vital role of women’s leadership – Women’s leadership is essential for a successful Just Transition. 4️⃣ Strengthening the foundation for women's leadership – A feminist perspective must be integrated into policies to empower women in climate action. The event brought together over 120 representatives from parliaments, governments, the private sector, CSOs, and international organisations across multiple regions to foster gender-responsive climate action ahead of COP29. #JustTransition2024 #EnergyCommunity #GenderEquality #ClimateAction #WomenInLeadership #COP29

⚡️Just Transition Forum 2024 📍Energy Community hosted the Just Transition Forum this week in Pristina, starting with a captivating video featuring the coal municipality of Obiliq/Obilić and its residents, who are central to the forthcoming energy transition. In this video, coal workers in the KEK power plant and mine share their opinions and concerns about their jobs and futures, the transition away from coal as well as the support they are hoping for. The video was prepared as a contribution to the 2024 Energy Community Just Transition Forum with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. 💬 The Forum followed up with key sessions that featured discussions on financing the future, while Monika Figaj, Climate and Just Transition expert at the Energy Community Secretariat, delivered a powerful reminder: “Our fossil-based infrastructure won’t last another generation. It’s time for National Energy and Climate Plans, Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategies, and Just Transition Plans to lead the way. Youth representatives also brought an essential voice to the table, calling on decision-makers to engage with them and adapt communication efforts to better target and engage the youth, with social media campaigns evoking empathy and calls to action at the heart of their upcoming efforts.
