Last week, GWNET had the honour of participating in the SADC Sustainable Energy Week Conference in Gaborone, Botswana. Under the theme "Accelerating Sustainable Energy Solutions for an Energy-Secure SADC Region," the event provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with regional energy experts and leaders, as well as to highlight our new project, Energising Women to Advance the Energy Transition in the SADC Region. This project is run by GWNET in partnership with SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE), with financial support from Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the operational unit of the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC). Our Communications Officer, Nandini Venkata, had the opportunity to moderate a panel discussion organised by Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centres (GN-SEC), focusing on accelerating clean cooking in Sub-Saharan Africa through the development of regional markets and supply chains. She also participated in a panel led by Shamil Tumisang Agosi, exploring initiatives to empower youth, women, and entrepreneurs in the energy transition. As an organisation dedicated to empowering women in the energy transition, one of the biggest highlights of the week was seeing inspiring women sharing their thoughts on advancing sustainable energy solutions. This includes Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Lesego Chombo, Botswana’s Minister of Youth and Gender, and H.E. Ambassador Romana Königsbrun. A big thank you to the conference organisers for facilitating these important discussions and to the speakers for their valuable insights. It is our pleasure to feature Phuong Tran in our GWNET Member Spotlight! Phuong recently conducted a study titled "Assessment of the Role of Women’s Networks in Promoting Gender Equality, Women Leadership Development, and Knowledge Sharing within the Energy Industry Globally." This research, developed in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH’s #TUEWAS, evaluates the effectiveness of women’s networks in advancing gender equality and leadership in the energy sector, while also providing strategies to enhance their impact. The full report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eji_QmDn With over a decade of experience in Vietnam’s energy sector, Phuong has been a driving force for change. She founded the Vietnam Energy Efficiency Network EEN-Vietnam and launched initiatives such as the Women Future Engineers group. She also serves as a Board Member of Women in Energy Vietnam (WEVN), further championing gender equality and knowledge-sharing in the industry. One of Phuong’s favourite quotes is from G.D. Anderson: "Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength." We congratulate Phuong on her incredible work and are eager to see her continue to make her mark in empowering women in energy! GWNET membership is open and free to all women working in energy.
