The Land Management for Sustainability (LAMASUS) Project will provide tools and design processes allowing EU policymakers to assess the impacts of future land-use policies ahead of their implementation, and so make informed choices for European agriculture and land use, as well as the global climate. As part of the European Green Deal, and in line with European Climate Law, the EU has set itself a binding target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The land use sector can play a key role in achieving these goals as it has more potential for carbon sequestration than any other sector – it is in fact already removing 7% of all EU emissions. Using land to capture carbon is not an easy option – land as a resource is subject to heavy competition to provide food security, preserve biodiversity, and accommodate living space as well as infrastructure. EU policies that prioritize one use over others need to be carefully designed in an integrated approach accounting for diverse societal demands and the synergies and trade-offs among them. To ensure that the project meets the EU’s policy needs, representatives from five different departments of the European Commission, as well as noted experts in land use and agricultural policy have been invited to join the meeting and oversee the project’s progress in the form of a Policy Advisory Board. “LAMASUS will create a new level of societal engagement in which local actors contribute to the design of effective and efficient EU policies for climate neutrality and serve as an exemplar for other policy processes within the European Green Deal,” concludes LAMASUS principal investigator and IIASA Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group Leader, Petr Havlík.

📢 Out now 📰 ! Read our latest paper on "Impacts of land-use change on biospheric carbon: an oriented benchmark using the ORCHIDEE land surface model" Here, we present a systematic evaluation of the performance of dynamic global vegetation models (DGVM) Organising Carbon and Hydrology in Dynamic Ecosystems (ORCHIDEE) in reproducing observed Land Use Change impacts on biospheric carbon stocks over Europe. Results indicate agreement between the model and observed spatial patterns and temporal trends, such as the increase in biomass with age, when simulating biosphere carbon stocks. However, the model underestimates carbon gains for cropland-to-grassland conversions and carbon losses for grassland-to-cropland and forest-to-cropland conversions. These discrepancies are attributed to bias arising from soil erosion rate, which is not fully captured in ORCHIDEE. Our study provides an oriented benchmark for assessing the DGVMs against observations and explores their potential in studying the impact of Land Use Change on soil organic carbon stocks. https://lnkd.in/ejuzNmQY #landuse #biomass #DGVM #Orchidee

📢 #LAMASUS_EU proudly announce that LAMASUS researcher Felicity Addo from International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) received the ÖGA (Austrian Association of Agricultural Economics) Award for the Best Dissertation 🏆 ! Felicity wrote a thesis on "Assessing Productivity and Efficiency, and its Determinants: The Case of Crop Farms 🌾 in Austria" Austrian crop farms face unique challenges due to small size and natural disadvantages. Felicity´s thesis delves into the technical efficiency of these farms, revealing that while persistent efficiency is improving, transient inefficiencies remain a significant hurdle. 🌱 Part-time farms tend to be more scale-efficient than full-time farms, and factors like farm size, specialization, and access to resources are key to success. 📊 With technological progress driving the sector forward, it's crucial for farmers to adapt and grow to remain competitive in the long term. Felicity´s current scientific interests include agricultural production systems and value chains, food security, sustainable rural development, micro-economic modeling, and agricultural resource management and efficiency. #landuse #landusemodelling #agriculture #sustainablefarming #Agriculture #FarmEfficiency #AustriaFarming

📢 #LAMASUS_EU recently published a new dataset 🌽 📉 The LAMASUS Annual Corine Land Cover Time Series🗺 (2000 to 2018) This data set consists of an annual times series of Corine land cover from 2000 to 2018. The layers for 2000, 2006, 2012 and 2018 are the accounting layers of Corine land cover, produced by the European Environment Agency as part of the European Union's Copernicus Land Monitoring Service. #LAMASUS_EU is looking back at a successful meeting #ERSA2024. A highlight was the special session on "The role of EU- and Regional Policy in Sustainable Land Use Management" that was organised by LAMASUS scientific coordinator Tamás Krisztin. 🌽 During this session, LAMASUS researcher Klaus Mittenzwei talked about the reasons for differences in structural change between organic and conventional agriculture in Norway. 🌽 Furthermore, Tamás Krisztin gave an update about the CAP across regions and the varied impact of agricultural subsidies on EU land use. 🌽Raja Chakir talked about Land Use Adaptation to Climate Change in Europe 🌽 Apart from these contributions, Anna Renhart presented a paper on land use in alpine regions, in which she discussed how farmers cultivatign alpine pastures respond to subsidies Thank you European Regional Science Association (ERSA) for organising! #landuse #landusemanagement #agriculture #climatechange #subsidies #CAP

🌾 Farmers at the Crossroads: Navigating Modern Challenges 🌍 #LAMASUS_EU researcher Franz Sinabell was interviewed by Der Pragmaticus on the challenges for farming. In an era where sustainability and food security are at the forefront, our farmers are facing unprecedented challenges. From climate change and technological disruption to regulatory pressures and shifting consumer demands, the agricultural landscape is evolving rapidly. The interview with Franz Sinabell highlights these struggles, emphasizing the critical role of innovation, policy support, and resilient practices in ensuring that our agricultural systems can meet the needs of tomorrow. As we move forward, it’s essential that we support our farmers in adapting to these changes, ensuring that they continue to be the backbone of our societies. What do you think is the most significant challenge for today’s farmers? How can we as a community contribute to solutions? 🤔 https://lnkd.in/dUyU-pve #Agriculture #Sustainability #Innovation #FoodSecurity #Farmers

#LAMASUS_EU researcher Franz Sinabell wrote an article on the current challenges faced by agriculture, particularly crop farming. Here are some key insights: 🌽 Climate change affects agriculture severely; adaptations are necessary, and that brings higher costs 🌽 The demand for biological and sustainable production has increased, leading to diversification of products 🌽There is a need for increased digitalisation; and an increased need for knowhow and data management 🌽Political frameworks in countries differ; for instance in some countries, regulations are permissive regarding innovative plant breeding technologies. Other political themes like import of grain, and use of fertilisation and pesticides can play a role Read more ⬇ #agriculture #cropfarming #climatechange #marketdemands #digitalisation #politicalframeworks https://lnkd.in/eMGkERWe
