Reducing nuclear risks through innovation, inclusion, and dialogue using open source data. Programme of Pax Sapiens.
Info
The mission of Open Nuclear Network (ONN) is to reduce the risk that nuclear weapons are used in response to error, uncertainty or misdirection, using innovation, inclusion and dialogue supported by open source data analysis. Today, more than ever before, nuclear weapons are at risk of being used due to human or technical error, uncertainty about adversaries' capabilities or intentions or intentional misdirection, particularly in the context of escalating conflict. ONN works on nuclear risk reduction in two complementary ways: - A team of analysts collects data and produces informational briefs, leveraging publicly available data and state-of-the-art technology. - In tandem, ONN deploys a network of trusted third parties for data-enabled efforts to improve dialogue among world leaders and decision makers and promote nuclear de-escalation.

📢 #ONNexternal: ONN Research Assistant Nikita Degtyarev shared insights with European Leadership Network (ELN) on the return of US long-range missiles in Europe, saying that Russia won’t passively observe NATO’s long-range missile development - what seems manageable could become expensive and unpredictable. Read more ⬇️
The US and Germany have agreed to redeploy conventional long-range missiles to Europe, starting with periodic deployments in 2026, in response to Russia’s dual-capable missile capabilities. We ask five network members what effect this could have on strategic stability and what steps can be taken to reduce possible risks. Featuring contributions from: - Dr Klaus Naumann Former Chief of Staff of the German armed forces, Former Chairman of the NATO Military Committee -Sabine Mengelberg ELN Senior Network member and Assistant Professor of International Security Studies at the Netherlands Defence Academy -Nils Schmid ELN Senior Network member, Member of the German Bundestag, German Social Democrats Group Coordinator on Foreign Policy -Nikita Degtyarev Younger Generation Leaders Network on Euro-Atlantic Security (YGLN) member and Research and Engagement Assistant at the Open Nuclear Network -Heinrich Brauss ELN Senior Network member and Former NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning Click the link below to see their contributions in full ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/dFbsYQjc

📣 #ONNexternal: ONN Senior Analyst Jaewoo S. spoke at United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) at Vienna's panel “After the Summit of the Future: New Momentum for Arms Control & Disarmament?”, highlighting the challenging state of nuclear disarmament and emphasising the Pact's forward-looking approach.
It was fantastic to see a fully booked room for the #ViennaConversationSeries yesterday. The #PactForTheFuture is a key step towards global action on disarmament and arms control, and the energetic intergenerational dialogue highlighted how disarmament affects us all. 🙏 A huge thank you to all our speakers and participants, with special appreciation to Diplomatische Akademie Wien and the Austrian Research Association for making it possible! 📣 #ONNexternal: ONN Research Consultant Kseniia Pirnavskaia has been selected for the OSCE Secretariat's pool of Young Experts initiative. Congratulations!
Reducing Nuclear Risks through Engagement & Monitoring at Open Nuclear Network, Austria & Exploring Science&Tech Policy at KAIST, South Korea
I’m excited to share that I’ve been selected for the OSCE Secretariat's pilot Pool of Young Experts initiative. This is a wonderful opportunity to engage deeply with the OSCE's work and connect with fellow young professionals. The initiative brings together 82 emerging leaders—54 women and 28 men—from across the OSCE region. Its primary goal is to enhance the involvement of young women and men in peace and security discussions within the region. A mentorship component is also included, providing invaluable guidance and support to participants. Through this initiative, the OSCE will also benefit from our insights, particularly in critical areas such as gender equality, sustainable development, human rights, and inclusive dialogue. Additionally, young professionals will have the chance to engage in OSCE thematic events, ensuring that youth perspectives are integral to policy discussions. To learn more, visit: https://lnkd.in/dpvD-kg7 I’m excited to see what lies ahead with this initiative! P.S: Stealing the design idea (with a permission!) from one and only UN comms queen Vanda Proskova. Thanks for this - and happy to be in this initiative together!
