Insights from Urban ReLeaf sensor data in #Riga Although the weather is good, the air quality - not so much! Nora Gagane from Riga Planning Region provides an update on progress. You can now follow the data and indicators of 20 Urban ReLeaf air quality sensors across the city of Riga. These are sensors that measure PM2.5 pollution - super fine particles that cannot be seen with the eye at all. 🍃Urban ReLeaf Charts Future of Citizen-Led Urban Greening in Cascais ✨Two weeks ago, Urban ReLeaf partners came together in beautiful Cascais for our 2025 General Assembly. Over three days, we reflected on progress and looked ahead to scaling our citizen-led urban greening efforts across Europe. 🌱We explored key themes including inclusive citizen science, empowering digital technologies, critical data gaps for urban policy and planning, innovative governance models, and more. ⚡️Future plans were also discussed, including the launch of Pop-up Community & Culture Labs and the rollout of wearable sensors to support climate monitoring. 💻Yesterday, I had the pleasure of being a panelist at a well-organized and well-attended webinar #CitizenScience beyond #2030: Societal Engagement for a #Sustainable Future," hosted by the #ECS project and the ECSA - European Citizen Science Association. The session was expertly moderated by Alan Irwin, with a great panel including Michael Arentoft, Ariane König, Francois Grey, and Walter J. Radermacher. 🔑Some of my key takeaways include: ➡️Citizen science has a significant role to play in #monitoring and achieving the #SDGs. Over time, the citizen science community has gathered substantial evidence of its potential, demonstrating its impact not just in scientific publications and theory, but also through real-world examples like the project on #SDG14 and #plastics in #Ghana. This initiative, involving the #NSO, #UNEP, #CSOs, #academia, and other key actors at both the national and global levels, showcases the potential of citizen science #data for #officialstatistics #SDGs #SDGmonitoring and #policy. For more details, read here: https://lnkd.in/gDzcRJGV. ➡️We need more collaborations and dialogue to build #partnerships that foster trust in citizen science data and results. This includes expanding partnerships within the citizen science community and extending beyond the citizen science community and regional borders, globally, as the SDGs require consistent data collection globally. ➡️Citizen Science Global Partnership is well-positioned to lead these efforts, but this requires sustained funding beyond small pilot projects. For achieving the SDGs, more granular data and local-level actions are also crucial, going beyond national and global scales Urban ReLeaf! 🔓While progress has been slow, change is happening. Global agreements and frameworks are already being designed with citizen science in mind such as the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework. We should continue advocating for its inclusion and visibility in such frameworks and agreements. 🔊As scientists, decision-makers, funders, and citizen scientists, we all have a role to play. With major political shifts taking place in Europe and around the world, advocating for more #citizenscience, #citizengenerateddata, and #citizendata has never been more urgent or important!! 🎉In 2024, the 'An Urban Park for the Future' campaign successfully engaged over 1,000 citizens across seven green spaces in Cascais, Portugal. 🌳By gathering data on thermal and bioclimatic comfort, the initiative provided critical insights to inform urban planning and green space policies. 🌱Participants shared their experiences via surveys accessible through QR codes placed in study areas, with volunteers from Cascais Jovem ensuring the campaign ran smoothly. The most comfortable park according to respondents: Quinta da Carreira Urban Park. 25–34 years old was the average age of respondents (20.72%).
