Ministers of Energy & Finance from across Africa came together last week at the World Bank Group Annual Meetings and galvanized action to bring electricity to 300 million people. The World Bank Group and the African Development Bank Group are accelerating electrification efforts, governments are making reforms, and together with The Rockefeller Foundation and The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), we are helping mobilize greater support. These efforts will attract more investment in energy and unlock development opportunities across Africa. #DYK for the first time in over a decade, the number of people without electricity access increased by 10 million? The global unelectrified population currently stands at 685 million with many of these unelectrified people residing in Sub-Saharan #Africa. The number of people without access to clean fuels and technologies for cooking currently stands at 2.1 billion, with 50% of these people residing in #Asia and 45% in Africa. The global energy goals, especially those linked to #electricityaccess and #cleancooking are dangerously off track, and there is an urgent need to raise ambition and increase financial commitments to #SDG7 and just and equitable #energytransition. 🎉 Congratulations to Masontsika on being selected as an #InnovationFund grantee! 🌍⚡    💡They will be creating transformative impact by installing their innovative Masontsika Bazary (Powerhub) in 12 #offgrid health facilities in #Madagascar. The Bazary combines an Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) model with Pico PV Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) systems, through which each facility will have reliable solar-powered electricity to supporting critical medical equipment. At the #GIINImpactForum, I sat down with The Global Impact Investing Network's Dean Hand to discuss how to accelerate a just and equitable #energytransition across the world. I highlighted that there are insufficient clean #energy investments in emerging markets and developing economies. I called on impact investors to deploy more #cleanenergy investments in emerging markets and developing countries and make bankable opportunities for private capital to drive the clean energy transition at scale. This will in turn usher in significant social and economic benefits for the people living in these countries.

In 2023, the world reached a significant milestone in energy efficiency with the COP28 Global Renewable and Energy Efficiency Pledge and the first global stocktake of the Paris Agreement, calling on countries to double the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements to over 4% by 2030.
