This month, our SAL site in Linz has been equipped with some useful new test devices at the LIT-Factory at the Johannes Kepler Universität Linz. We have received the new 5G RAN hardware equipment from Nokia. In September, we have installed the hardware in our multi vendor 5G Testbed in the factory shop floor in Linz. Furthermore, a demonstration of the industrial automated pick and place use case using a mobile robot from Omron Industrial Automation Europe, and a robot arm from Universal Robots, controlled and monitored over 5G, have successfully been performed two times at the COST CA20120 INTERACT meeting and for the 5GEARING project consortium, respectively.   Soon, we will also extend our 5G Testbed with new systems such as UWB for localization, WiFi APs for comparison of different wireless communication technologies and cameras systems for situational awareness topics. 💡 You want to get a chance to check out our 5G Testbed? Our colleague Nastaran Behravan is selected for the Carinthiacus award 2024 in the category “International” by Regionmarketing Carinthia! 🤩 The Carinthiacus International award honors individuals with roots outside Austria who excel in innovative, sustainable, and future-oriented projects in Carinthia, impacting the economy, education, and quality of life. Nastaran develops lead-free piezoelectric and ferroelectric thin films for MEMS applications, crucial for sensors and actuators in devices like smartphones. 📱 Her work with materials like Aluminum Nitride and Aluminum Scandium Nitride promotes sustainable technology. These materials enhance MEMS devices used in telecommunications, healthcare, and automotive industries. Recently, Marco Deluca (Head of Thin Film Technologies) gave an invited talk at the STAC-14 Conference, organized by the Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) in Yokohama, Japan. In his talk, Marco presented SAL, the Microsystems Division, and the latest results from his ERC Consolidator Grant CITRES on lead-free thin films with ultrahigh energy density for energy storage applications. He also advertised the upcoming IEEE ISAF 2025 Conference (International Symposium on the Applications of Ferroelectrics), which will be co-organized by SAL together with the Jozef Stefan Institute and the Technische Universität Graz, and will take place in Graz next July.

Recently, our colleague Bernardo Realista Ferreira attended the SPIE Photomask Technology + Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography in Monterey, California, USA. Representing the work of his research team around Nikolai Andrianov, PhD, Munir Azeem, Jasmin Spettel, Tai Nguyen, Clément Fleury, and Dao Thang Duy, Bernardo gave an invited talk on “Advancing Miniaturized Sensing and Imaging with Sub-Wavelength Metaoptics”. The presentation emphasized how sub-wavelength #metaoptics can drive the #miniaturization of #photonics by enabling functional optics using sub-wavelength scale structures. The group also discussed the integration of numerical simulations like #Synopsys’ Photonic Solutions with lithographic mask computation in a full optimization loop and showcased our latest contributions in metaoptics for miniaturized #sensing and #imaging, offering prospects for collaboration and future development.   At SAL, we are dedicated to advancing metaoptics with partners toward a mature technology by: 💿 Co-developing technologies from concept to prototyping 💿 Delivering reliable fabrication processes 💿 Fostering collaboration with other RTOs, industry partners, and end-users 💿 Exploring funding opportunities to support development 💿 Offering complementary processes compatible with a wide range of tools, materials, and simulation engines 💿 Collaborating with design tool suppliers to provide tailored feedback for specific use cases 💿 Assisting in benchmarking processes and technologies for optimal performance 💿 Engaging with stakeholders to ensure technology maturity and market alignment SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics
