‘We need to get our lives back. I don’t know how fast it will happen, but I am sure it will.' Zarah's home was swept away by the #flood that displaced over 400,000 people in the #Borno State this September. SOS Children's Villages Nigeria is on the ground delivering emergency supplies and financial assistance as well as hygiene kits for girls and women in camps for the internally displaced people. 'I was getting ready to go to school when mama told me that there was a war. On TV, we saw soldiers carrying guns and shooting. I wasn't afraid at first. But later, a military plane flew above and started firing. Soon, we had to leave. The journey was difficult - we had to travel on rough, hidden roads. We encountered an armed group wearing civilian clothes. They stopped our bus and searched our bags, speaking in loud, angry voices. A little later, we came across another armed group, this time in official uniforms. They asked about my older brothers, which made me really scared. Later, we met soldiers who were kinder. They didn’t search our bus. One of them joked with me through the window, saying, 'Come down and grab a gun, aren’t you a man?'. Even though we had food for the road, I didn’t feel hungry. On the road, I saw lots of burnt cars and buildings destroyed by bombs. I was really worried about our home, my school, and my friends. We arrived and I thought we would settle for a while. I made new friends and joined a local football team. It felt a little like normal life again. But then my mom said that war had arrived to where we are, so we had to leave. Once again, we travelled in a bus through desert roads, and the journey felt endless. I can’t shake the feeling that war might start here too. If that happens, I guess we’ll have to move again. I don’t know where we'll go next. If I could talk to the armed groups, I would tell them: 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿.' 📃 This is how Mahdi talks about his experience of the war in #Sudan. The 13-year-old has been displaced by the conflict that has triggered the world's largest child displacement crisis.

📢 An important achievement for the #EUChildParticipation platform. Our team at SOS Children's Villages International is proud of be part of this groundbreaking initiative. 🤝 Together with colleagues from Save the Children Europe and partners, we are contributing to bringing #EU policies closer to children, thus contributing to more child-centered and future proof decision-making 📝 Let's continue to write the future of the EU together with children! #childrenrights #childparticipation Marie-Cécile Rouillon Marta Kuljon Iris Abraham Katerina Nanou
Did you know that nearly 20% of EU citizens are children? Or that the EU has a dedicated Children’s Right’s Strategy, which includes a child’s right to have a say in matters that concern them? Or that there’s an EU-level Platform, set up since 2022, to amplify children’s voices in EU policymaking? The EU Children’s Participation Platform works with and for children and young people (under 18) to help get their voices heard in EU decision-making. It’s vital to communicate in clear and simple ways, which everyone can understand and engage with. Children help us to get it right. The Platform has just won a Special Achievement Award for promoting inclusive and accessible language for co-creation with children on the Feeling Safe consultation. This included an online survey co-created with child members of the Platform, plus child-friendly versions of the consultation results, the European Commission’s Recommendation on Integrated Child Protection Services, and related online content. Children’s views on what they need to feel safe helped shaping the recommendation. Visit the website to see the results of the Feeling Safe consultation, and the co-creation with the Platform’s amazing child members. → https://lnkd.in/dus_DcS9 #EUChildParticipation #ChildRights #EURights

No one is immune to mental health struggles. They can touch anyone, anywhere. Yet, access to care and support isn’t always equal. In the #WellU project, we work to ensure that refugee children and their caregivers - who are often among the most vulnerable - receive the mental health support they need. By equipping non-specialist lay professionals with tools and training, we break down barriers and work towards mental health care available to everyone, regardless of their situation. Mental health challenges are universal, so the solutions should be too. Let’s come together to support mental well-being across all communities. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dqsGeniv #EU4Health #EU4H #MentalHealthMatters #MHPSS 🎨 Illustration by Masha Pleshakova, an illustrator and graphic designer specializing in children’s book art. We welcome the release of the World Health Organization’s and UNICEF’s ‘Mental health of children and young people. Service guidance’ making the case for building community-based #mentalhealth care; involving children and young people in decisions about their care; involving their families and caregivers and calling for action for children and young people to receive the mental health care they need. 💡 See here: https://lnkd.in/djhA-R9c 📸 Symbolic photo, Alea Horst
