    We’re delighted to announce TriLite has successfully completed an extended Series A funding round, including significant investment from Continental’s Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) Unit, raising our total Series A funding to over €20 million.   "TriLite has developed an outstanding display solution for AR applications and Continental places high value on TriLite’s innovative technology. Beyond consumer applications we see high potential in various automotive applications," said Jürgen Bilo, Managing Director, Continental Corporate Venture Capital Unit.   As well as Continental’s CVC, the round included significant investment from an undisclosed global electronics supplier for TriLite’s Trixel® 3 projection display.     Our head of product, Oliver Jones represented TriLite at the “Industrial AR/VR” panel discussion, part of the International Machinery Forum hosted by AUSSENWIRTSCHAFT AUSTRIA, ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA and Enterprise Europe Network Austria. During the discussion, we explored why augmented reality is a perfect fit for industrial uses like maintenance, troubleshooting, training, and safety logistics. We also looked at how AR and VR are reshaping the sector by improving learning, work processes, and communication, while addressing challenges like knowledge retention, inefficient knowledge transfer, unscalable training, and the growing skills gap.     Our principal optical architect, Dr. Louahab Noui, gave a presentation at the AR/VR Display Summit in Silicon Valley, California. Hosted by DSCC, a Counterpoint Research Company, and supported by Qualcomm, Applied Materials, and others, this event focuses on emerging display technologies for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. In his talk, “Software-defined laser beam scanner display for high-volume augmented reality applications,” Dr. Louahab presented the unique characteristics of the software-defined Trixel® 3 laser beam scanner (LBS) display. This hardware/software combination makes the Trixel® 3 the brightest, lightest, and most compact AR display, addressing key consumer requirements. It is also crucial for mass production without the need for extremely tight tolerances. Dr. Louahab's analysis highlighted the advantages of using a laser light source, particularly in terms of image resolution, high luminous flux efficiency, small footprint, and the low mass of the Trixel® 3.     AR smart glasses to become successful consumer products, they must be manufacturable in high volumes at a low cost. What does that mean for their design and manufacture?   AR glasses have historically been bulky and expensive. They need to become smaller and cheaper - with the display system being the key component that needs change to convince consumers.   As well as consumers, OEMs, who will manufacture the glasses, need to be convinced about display technologies. They seek solutions that are mass-market-manufacturable and future-proof.   To address these demands, TriLite has implemented a 'software-first' approach from the outset, shifting complexity from hardware to software. This logical reduction in hardware complexity simplifies mass production, reduces component counts, and minimizes critical failure points.   We have developed a proprietary stack of algorithms, the Trajectory Control Module (TCM), for advanced control of the Trixel® 3 projector, minimizing the overall size and complexity of the LBS optical system.   To facilitate rapid market entry, explains Dr. Dietmar Gleispach, MBA Managing Director at TriLite, we have qualified a high-volume manufacturing services platform through partnerships with key suppliers for assembly and components, such as Infineon Technologies and TDK for MEMS mirrors.     What is the best display technology for AR glasses? When comparing Laser Beam Scanners (LBS) to microLEDs, LBS emerges as the superior choice. TriLite’s CTO, Dr. Jörg Reitterer, sheds light on the reasons.   Selecting the optimal display technology involves assessing key factors like brightness, size, and power consumption. Jörg points out that while panel-based displays are common, they often require external optics and can be cumbersome.   Considering microLED displays, they are effective for applications requiring large displays with a wide pixel pitch, such as in TVs or automotive displays.   But for AR glasses, microLEDs with small pixel pitches still need to overcome some fundamental issues for high volume adoption. They have lower efficiency for small pixels, which means lower brightness, increased power consumption and more thermal issues. Additionally, small microLED displays frequently struggle with production yield and achieving uniform color and brightness.   In contrast, LBS displays are not only compact but also efficiently scale to provide a broader field of view without enlarging the display optics.
