The UNIDO's Programme for Hydrogen in Industry accelerates a sustainable and just H2 transition in developing countries.
Info
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization launched its Global Programme for Hydrogen in Industry to support a just hydrogen transition in developing countries by putting social and environmental responsibilities in focus. Through the Programme, UNIDO aims to influence the development of market polices, standards, skills, financing instruments, innovation and coordination between key stakeholders that play an essential role in the development of a hydrogen economy. The Programme consists of the Global Partnership for Hydrogen in Industry (global intervention) and the Technical Cooperation (country-specific interventions). About UNIDO: With its multi-decade track record, UNIDO has created a unique base of institutional knowledge on identifying and tackling a range of obstacles developing countries may face in their path towards industrialization. UNIDO successfully collaborates with a wide range of partners globally to support industry in achieving net zero. The Global Programme for Hydrogen in Industry hat dies direkt geteilt
✨ I was delighted to attend, together with UNIDO's Managing Director, Gunther Beger, the vibrant #EU-#Egypt Investment Conference in Cairo, where we witnessed groundbreaking initiatives and the emergence of promising cooperations and investment partnerships. The conference showcased Egypt's great potential to become a major #greenhydrogen hub. Throughout the conference, I engaged in discussions on green hydrogen advancements and potential collaborations with government officials, private sector leaders, and financial institutions. ✨It was a great pleasure to meet Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General for Energy at the #EuropeanCommission. We shared ideas on how to increase female participation in the growing H2 sector. In a very pleasant encounter with Francesco La Camera, the Director-General of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), we discussed new financing mechanisms for GH2. ✨During my stay in Cairo, I had excellent exchanges with: ✅ #Government of #Egypt (Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Ambassador Mohamed Nasr; Ministry of Electricity, Ministry of Environment): aligning UNIDO's global hydrogen programme's activities with Egypt’s national priorities and strategies. ✅#German Embassy in Cairo (Counselor Holger Illi) and #GIZ. ✅#Industry leaders (incl. Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), Fertiglobe, OCI Global, DEME Group, Siemens, Siemens Energy and Zero Waste): exploring potential collaborations in Egypt. ✅#Financial institutions - IFC - International Finance Corporation, EBRD, and CDP Cassa Depositi e Prestiti: discussing innovative financing mechanisms for the green hydrogen development. ✅Invest International from the Netherlands: exploring potential investment opportunities in Egypt’s green hydrogen sector. ✨#UNIDO is committed to accelerate the sustainable development, application and trade of green hydrogen, contributing to Egypt’s clean energy transition and economic growth with social and environmental benefits. ✨#Takeaway from the Conference: The EU-Egypt Investment Conference catalyzed significant partnerships between top international companies and Egyptian entities. These collaborations will harness cutting-edge technology, industry expertise, and substantial capital to support Egypt’s ambitious green hydrogen vision. A major focus was green ammonia production, a clean fuel derivative of hydrogen. 🤝 Gunther Beger, Ambassador Mohamed Nasr, Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Francesco La Camera, Ahmed El-Hoshy, Ibrahim Samy, Saad Sabrah, Rana Ghoneim, CHEICK-OUMAR SYLLA, Wagner Albuquerque de Almeida, Helmut von Struve, Jurgen Rigterink, Dalia Shoukry, Bart De Smet, Holger Illi, Ashraf Hamasa, Guido Battista, and all other dear partners and collaborators! 🎉 Big thanks to the Team UNIDO Egypt for their fantastic support during the mission. Patrick GILABERT 🇺🇳, Gihan Bayoumi, ALL other dear colleagues & Ahmed Reda.

Happy and exhausted, concluding a mission marathon. Over the past month, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to visit Algeria, Namibia, and South Africa for a series of stakeholder meetings and site visits. In each country, I spent a week engaging with our partners and laying the groundwork for UNIDO’s Global Clean Hydrogen Programme. This project spans eight partner countries, aiming to support the development of hydrogen policies, enhance technical readiness, and advise pilot projects and industrial clusters. I’m particularly grateful to my colleagues and partners who facilitated the trip and made each visit a success. It’s been a busy and fulfilling journey, and I’m excited about the progress we made. 💡 To shed light on existing #financial and technical assistance for #cleanhydrogen initiatives in developing countries, UNIDO conducted the mapping exercise in collaboration with the #BreakthroughAgenda and contributions from the #WorldBank and #IRENA. 🔎 The results and conclusions can be found here: ➡ https://lnkd.in/drd5YJix #Financial assistance: The questionnaire respondents reported almost no financial assistance in the form of bonds (only 2% of all reported assistance initiatives). Green bonds are designed to fund environmentally sustainable projects such as clean hydrogen initiatives and offer a favourable risk ratio. Bonds can redirect significant capital to sustainable projects, but this potential remains largely untapped. ✅28 %: Grants emerged as the predominant instrument; ✅20%: Concessional loans, representing traditional financial aid methods. ✅14%: Equity, considered more innovative. ✅Bonds and subordinated debts are minimally used, with only one organization applying them across nearly all value chain stages. ✅Funding predominantly comes from a mix of the institution's own resources and donor contributions, totaling 50%. The questionnaire was distributed to 44 institutions across international organizations, government agencies, and development financial institutions. Responses were received from 27 organizations. 🤝We thank our partners for their excellent cooperation and all respondents for making this work possible! In particular, we extend our gratitude to: #BreakthroughAgenda, The World Bank, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA); Paul Durrant, Harley Higgins, Emanuele Bianco, Dolf Gielen, Eunji Park, Smeeta Fokeer, Marie-Christin Schabus, Jan Sievernich, Laura Handberg #SustainableDevelopment #UNIDO #greenhydrogen
