  • 🌌🚀 Day 2 in New York - the first-ever United Nations Space Bridge on Space Traffic Coordination (STC) took place and the UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee began discussions and negotiations on the peaceful uses of space.   🌍🛰️ UN Space Bridge on Space Traffic Coordination: With space activities increasing rapidly, global coordination on space traffic has never been more critical. Today, UNOOSA brought together experts from governments and the commercial sector to tackle the complex issues of space traffic coordination.    Broadly speaking space traffic coordination (STC) refers to systems, encompassing SSA information as well as data-sharing and possibly operational guidelines or practices, that seek to reduce the potential for collisions and other incidents in space that could create additional debris or other safety risks for space activities, and seeks to increase the safety and efficiency of space activities.   🗣️ Fourth Committee Discussions: The UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee also kicked off discussions and negotiations related to international cooperation on the peaceful uses of outer space and the annual "omnibus resolution", that endorses the annual #COPUOS report. Member States shared their insights and reaffirmed the importance of space as a domain for peace, development, and multilateral collaboration. #UNOOSA was proud to contribute its expertise to advancing space governance, emphasizing how space can help address global challenges.   🏛️🌌 At the Museum: At the iconic American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium, UNOOSA partnered to showcase how space activities can drive progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This immersive experience demonstrated to Member States and partners how satellite data, space-based technology, and collaboration can transform global development initiatives—from climate action to sustainable resource management.   Stay tuned as we continue our journey through the week’s events at the UN General Assembly, UN-Space, and more!

  • 🌱🚀 Empowering Global Food Security Through Space Technology! Last week, the Group of Friends of Food Security was launched in Vienna! Co-chaired by 🇮🇹 Italy and 🇸🇩 Sudan, this initiative brings together States and Vienna-based Organizations to address one of the world’s most pressing issues—food security.    🗣️ At the kick-off event, our Deputy Director Driss El Hadani emphasized the critical role of space in tackling this challenge: " In a world increasingly impacted by climate change, resource scarcity, and natural disasters, space-based technology provides indispensable tools for shaping resilient agricultural and fishing policies.”    🇺🇳🌽💧 #UNOOSA remains focused on advancing space’s contribution to global food security. Through programs like #Space4Water, #Space4ClimateAction, and UN Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER), we use space technology to enhance agricultural resilience, optimize water usage, support disaster response, and prevent crop loss.    🐟🇫🇷 UNOOSA will be convening stakeholders on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing at the upcoming 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France in June 2025. It’s been proven that a combination of space data & imagery, transponders on shipping vessels, and engagement with local law enforcement can cut instances of illegal fishing in national waters.    🛰️🌍 The Group of Friends of Food Security will strengthen global cooperation, combining space solutions with on-the-ground expertise to make a lasting impact in the fight against hunger. Together, through innovation and collaboration, we can create a more sustainable and food-secure world. 🤝   UNODC International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) UNIDO UNESCO Ocean CNES

Director, UN Office for Outer Space Affairs

🇺🇳🖖 Today is United Nations Day & to mark this, I'm sharing some reflections of Year 1 as Director of United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). 1️⃣ The Outer Space Treaties (yes, plural), principles, guidelines, & resolutions remain the cornerstone of global space governance & underpin the global space economy. Old? Yes! Out of date? No! 2️⃣ UNOOSA has kickstarted space economies & ecosystems - our projects have promoted STEM, inspired nations to look to the stars & launch their first satellites, created space agencies, laws, and have saved and transformed lives (see our Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/eUwZ6UYw). 3️⃣ The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (#COPUOS) remains the forum for consensually adopting new international standards on space for this fast-paced sector. The UN General Assembly endorses its decisions every year; standby for next week's news from New York! 4️⃣ The Pact for the Future, agreed by 193 Heads of State in September 2024, calls on COPUOS to address key priorities for space sustainability. UNOOSA will leverage its capacity-building role and the United Nations Space Bridge initiative to engage industry & governments - starting next week around STM. 5️⃣ I’ve now met all Member States, listened to their priorities & national challenges and understood the space solutions they offer and need. We will make sure to convene the right stakeholders and partners around key questions to ensure we can scale / replicate solutions to respond to those needs. 6️⃣🌚 There is more that unites us than divides us – we saw that at the first international lunar conference with both Artemis Accord and International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) signatories who shared so many of the same views. 7️⃣ Despite geopolitical tensions on Earth, all countries agree that the space environment needs maintaining, to ensure safe & sustainable space operations. Member States have a vital role in implementing the #LTSGuidelines and developing new mechanisms for #SpaceTraffic, #SpaceDebris & #SpaceResources as Heads of State called for. UNOOSA will support by levelling the playing field in terms of knowledge & understanding so they are equipped to take decisions that will advance these issues. 8️⃣♀️ As an International Gender Champion, I want to make sure all women & girls have the education/training/opportunities they need to play their rightful role in society & space. Check out our landmark #Space4Women study on #GenderEquality in the space sector & our Gender Mainstreaming Toolkit for the Space Sector. https://lnkd.in/ePJfHcxm ⛰️ This is just the tip of the iceberg, and I’m confident that a UNISPACE IV conference in Vienna in 2027 will be the key milestone to “make the case for space” for all decision-makers around the globe.

🚀✨ UNOOSA’s landmark #Space4Women study on #GenderEquality in the space sector is here! 👩🚀 Presented at IAC2024, this is the largest study of its kind, gathering insights from 53 space agencies and public space organizations globally to assess gender representation and policy in the space sector. Key findings include: 📊 Women make up 30% of public sector space organizations. 👩💼 Women hold only 19% of board roles and 21% of leadership positions. 🔬 Women are under-represented in technical, astronaut, and policy roles. 📚 Over-representation of women in education, outreach, HR, and admin roles. 🌍 Out of the world regions, African states are closest to gender parity in space. This report marks a significant step toward closing the gender gap in space and beyond! 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/dWngkxW9 🇰🇷 A special thanks to the Government of the Republic of Korea for their support in making this important study possible. It becomes apparent that more needs to be done to mainstream gender across the space sector - and #UNOOSA is taking concrete steps. With the generous support of the Government of Canada and valuable input from the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne, our 'Gender Mainstreaming Toolkit for the Space Sector' addresses challenges and provides practical solutions for member states to promote gender equality and mainstream a gender perspective into space policies and the space sector. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/ddgW6b4e Together, we are committed to fostering equality and making space accessible to all. 🌌 #WomenInSpace #Space4Women #WomenInSTEM #SpaceForAll #SDGs #Equality #STEM #Diversity Dr. Elise Stephenson GAICD
