Current research at the Vehicle Safety Institute at Graz University of Technology focuses on safety of vehicles with different levels of automation, safety of alternatively powered vehicle concepts and development of methods for the evaluation of systems to prevent accidents and reduce injuries. Therefore, basic research in the interdisciplinary fields of "Safety Aspects of Electric Energy Storage Systems", "Critical Traffic Scenarios", "Human Modeling with focus on Trauma Biomechanics" and "Crashworthiness of (Bio)Materials" is carried out. In each of these fundamental areas, investigations are performed both by means of numerical simulations (e.g. explicit finite element simulations) and experiments. A wide variety of data analysis methods (e.g. machine learning) are used, which are continuously improved.

Children differ from adults with their smaller body size and their traffic perception, movement behavior and hazard assessment. In the KISIMO project, the movement behavior of children was examined under laboratory conditions. The stopping distance of children of different ages did not differ. However, older children were faster and therefore had higher decelerations than younger children. They also reacted more quickly to a corresponding signal. In the last week of school, there was a safety day at BG Rein. Alexander Hödl and Ernst Tomasch managed a road safety session and demonstrated the protective capabilities of cycle helmets to the children. The pupils were then encouraged to make and test their own helmets. On May 24th, our institute took part in the Long Night of Research in Austria and had the chance to show our research at Technische Universität Graz to the public. This provided us with the opportunity to present and discuss findings from our current research initiatives in the field of battery safety, also from ongoing funded projects including: - SafeLib - BattBox - NEMO EU PROJECT - E-Trac. - … The overall title of our engaging stand was "What occurs when an electric car battery reaches its threshold?", which leads to very fascinating and very interesting discussions between scientific and public participants. Thanks to Technische Universität Graz for the opportunity to join, all the helpers from our institutes and especially to all participant.
