Following a brief networking & refreshment break, Manufacturing Science and Technology Team Lead at VTU Engineering Cornelia Haas took the stage with her presentation on ‘Contamination control strategy incl. risk assessment’. Cornelia covered the contamination control strategy in the new GMP Annex 1 and how there should be a holistic approach covering facility, utilities, equipment, raw materials, personnel and processes. 🚀 Highlights from our Conference: 'The Drivers of Tomorrow’s Landscape in Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing' On October 24, 2024, we gathered at RodeBol Events for a full day focused on the future of (bio)pharmaceutical production, featuring talks, panels, and networking. Here’s a recap of our main themes and speakers: 🔹 Theme 1: Digitalization     • Speakers: Elisa Canzani (Cognizant), Michael Rademaker (IDLab (UGent - UAntwerpen - imec), Alexander Ryckaert (Elegent)     • Highlights: Speakers shared insights into generative AI applications in (bio)pharma, new approaches to clarifying AI’s “black box” through tailored Bill of Materials systems, energy efficiency improvements in AI/ML, modelling for in silico formulation development, and more. 🔹 Theme 2: Enabling Technologies     • Speakers: Nico Vervoort (Johnson & Johnson) and Christian Stevens (Ghent University), Geert Schelkens (Ajinomoto Omnichem), Bart Rimez (Secoya Technologies)     • Highlights: Presentations covered a range of enabling technologies, including the application of flow chemistry at scale, advances in high-throughput experimentation, and continuous crystallization. 🔹 Theme 3: Biomanufacturing     • Speakers: Alessandro Rosengart (VTU Group), Jeroen Hofenk (SwiftPharma), Christine Labeur (272BIO Limited), Natalia Violato, Ph.D (PwC Belgium)     • Highlights: Topics included energy savings in biomanufacturing facilities, biomanufacturing using tobacco plants, challenges in developing biological drugs for animals, and an overview of the biomanufacturing landscape in Belgium. 🤝 Panel Discussion: “Biomanufacturing in Belgium: Strengths, Unmet Needs, and Roadmapping”     • Moderator: Tineke Van hooland     • Panelists: Samuel Speltdoorn (Brussels Airport), Koen Tyberghein (VIB), Thomas De Beer (CESPE), Natalia Violato, Ph.D (PwC Belgium), and Kristof Lowyck (Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT)) The panel explored Belgium's current and future biomanufacturing landscape, addressing strengths such as Belgium’s logistical expertise and challenges like the fragmented ecosystem and limited talent pool. Panelists highlighted the importance of initiatives like CESPE in bridging academia and industry, fostering talent development, and enhancing Belgium’s position in the (bio)pharmaceutical sector. Dieter De Smedt from Stad Gent concluded the day, emphasizing the vital role of the pharmaceutical ecosystem in Ghent’s growth and innovation. 🌍 European Summit of Industrial Biotechnology 🌱 The European Summit of Industrial Biotechnology (esib) will take place from November 12-14, 2024, in Graz, Austria. A key highlight of the event will be a presentation by our colleague Cornelia Haas, who will participate as speaker in the session "Spot on the Uncharted Territory of Sustainability." 🎉 We are happy to announce the article by Elke Wieser and Stefan Pauli on “Bridging AI and GMP Standards in the Future of Pharma”, published in issue 5/2024 of the international magazine “Chemistry Today”. In their article, the authors examine the integration of Artificial Intelligence 🤖 in pharmaceutical manufacturing 🏭, especially with regard to GMP standards. Regulatory bodies like the FDA 🇺🇸 and European authorities 🇪🇺 are in the process of incorporating AI into GxP standards, but formalized guidelines are still under development.
