Can you imagine how it would feel to have ✅ "bring bison back from the brink of extinction" on your daily to-do list? Tomorrow, you can ask Barbara Bendandi, Conservation Director at WWF-Romania, at the upcoming TEDxVitosha event in #Sofia. 🌱Discover how these remarkable landscape architects - the bison - are helping to restore ecosystems. Join us in celebrating the success of our European #bison reintroduction program in the Țarcu Mountains, where a herd of 170 bison could help store #CO2 emissions - equivalent to removing 43,000 US cars from the road for a year. Code red for nature. Code red for us. That, in short, is the message coming from #WWF's 2024 #LivingPlanetReport.
🚨 #BREAKING: This is a code red for nature. Species population numbers have plummeted by 73% on average since 1970. This is getting worse over time, when it should be getting better. Vital ecosystems are on the brink of collapse. We’re dangerously close to tipping points, where the damage to our planet will cause irreversible impacts on all our lives. We must turn things around immediately. Urgent action is needed now – not tomorrow or next year. 🗣 Share this video to #ActForOurPlanet. https://lnkd.in/ehgaaTC6 #LPR2024 #LivingPlanetReport

🌱Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) play a crucial role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and sustainability in Ukraine's recovery and EU accession efforts. 📢 However, Ukraine Facility implementation lacks a clear mechanism for including civil society. More must be done to foster genuine collaboration between CSOs, DG NEAR, and the Ukrainian government on sustainability aspects. What's Needed: ✔️ Formal engagement mechanisms for structured dialogue ✔️ Full adoption of the EU's partnership principle by Ukraine ✔️ Strategic discussions between senior DG NEAR leadership and CSOs. ✔️ Active inclusion of environmental CSOs in policy-making. ✔️ Transparent timelines for the Ukraine Facility’s implementation. ✔️ Capacity-building support for CSOs. Let’s build a more inclusive and sustainable recovery for Ukraine. The Turnu Măgurele–Nikopol hydropower project on the Lower Danube is a threat to local livelihoods. Along with its impact on communities and nature, it would also devastate local economies by disrupting: 🚜agricultural production 🐟fisheries 🚢inland waterway transport 📍tourism 🚨pose risks to the nuclear power plant in Kozloduy 📢 WWF, CEE Bankwatch Network, and multiple environmental organisations across the continent urgently call on the European Commission to remove this project from its list for EU priority investment. 📢 The European Parliament misses the opportunity to prevent a harmful hydropower project, putting local communities and wildlife at risk. It is crucial to recognise that significantly better environmental options are available for producing renewable energy without compromising the Lower Danube’s ecological health. ✅ Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind offer viable alternatives that do not pose the same level of environmental risk as the Turnu Măgurele–Nikopol hydropower project and do not impact critical water bodies. ❌Given these alternatives, the justification for derogation based on national energy security is weak. The Water Framework Directive allows derogations only if no better options exist and all mitigation measures are in place. WWF, CEE Bankwatch Network, and multiple environmental organisations across the continent urgently call on the European Commission to remove this project from its list for EU priority investment. ⚠️The Turnu Măgurele–Nikopol hydropower project on the Lower Danube is dangerous for both people and nature: 🏠If the project becomes reality, people in over 100 settlements might have to deal with detrimental impacts on their property, farmland, and fish ponds, due to flood risks or change in the water table. Some neighbourhoods in the Bulgarian town of Nikopol, especially those closest to the Danube, may even face forced resettlement. Let's prioritise the well-being of local communities and the surrounding wildlife. 📢 WWF, CEE Bankwatch Network, and multiple environmental organisations across the continent urgently call on the European Commission to remove this project from its list for EU priority investment. 🛑 European Parliament fails to stop harmful hydropower project endangering local communities and wildlife. The hazardous Turnu Măgurele–Nikopol hydropower project on the Lower Danube remained on the EU's priority investment list, despite the fact that it will: 🏠increase flood risk for over 100 towns and villages 🐟threaten protected areas and the survival of critically endangered species ❌is in contradiction to the EU's own policies. ⚠️WWF, CEE Bankwatch Network, and multiple environmental organisations across the continent urgently call on the European Commission to remove this project from its list of priority renewable energy projects. ⚠️Devastating hydropower project listed for priority EU investment despite major social, economic, and environmental concerns. WWF, CEE Bankwatch Network and 36 other environmental organizations across Europe urge EU decision makers to withdraw support for the Turnu Măgurele - Nikopol hydropower dam on the Lower Danube. Learn more from the latest Euractiv article here 👉 https://buff.ly/4goG9WR The project planned for the Lower Danube in Romania and Bulgaria is likely to: 🏠entail relocation of thousands of citizens and port infrastructure 🍅 disrupt agricultural production, fisheries, inland waterway transport, and tourism, and pose risks to the nuclear power plant in Kosloduy. 🐟 poses a critical threat to a string of protected areas as well as to migratory fish such as the iconic Danube sturgeons, teetering on the brink of extinction. ⚖️ violates key environmental commitments and EU legislation, such as the Habitats Directive and the Water Framework Directive We have urged the European Parliament to ask for a two-months extension of the scrutiny period of the delegated act of the European Commission, which adds the project to the priority EU investment list. This extension would allow the European Parliament to properly assess the impacts of this project. 🔴 If not, the delegated act will enter into force on 24 September. Project approval would undermine the EU's commitment to biodiversity protection and climate resilience, setting a dangerous precedent for future infrastructure developments.
