🌍As we close the curtains on the World Without Hunger Conference, we reflect on the purpose that brought us here: the unwavering commitment to end global hunger. 🌍 Over these transformative days in Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia, we saw leaders and changemakers unite, mobilize investments and inspire action to make a #WorldWithoutHunger a reality. Today, we leave with a powerful plan for transformative action: 🤝 🔹 Scale up sustainable, climate-resilient food systems 🔹 Expand equitable access to clean energy in agri-food sectors 🔹 Increase investment in infrastructure, technology, and support for small-scale farmers, women, and youth 🔹 Strengthen partnerships through the G20 Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty to address the roots of food insecurity This is the #AddisAbabaCalltoAction for governments, the private sector, and civil society to improve people's lives and end hunger. The World Without Hunger Conference (#WWH) in Addis Ababa has concluded. The three-day event successfully brought together over 1,500 global leaders, including heads of state and ministers, to tackle the urgent issue of ending #hunger. 🤝 Key outcomes include: ✅ The launch of the UNIDO-FAO study Ending Hunger is Possible, outlining critical strategies like agricultural modernization and infrastructure development. ✅ Sheikh Ebrahim bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI), pledging to allocate 20% of Islamic Financial Institutions’ loans to #SME development in low-income countries. ✅ Reiteration of the Union of Arab Banks' $1 trillion pledge toward the SDGs. These milestones underscore the transformative power that collective action, as well as the potential of supporting Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) can have in driving sustainable development. Through UNIDO’s SDG Innovation and Economic Transformation, we are positioning these partnerships as key drivers of future growth—creating opportunities for long-term solutions to hunger, economic development, and resilient industries. The commitment of both public and private sectors will be essential as we continue to foster impactful collaborations for lasting change. 🌍
🌍 Key Takeaways from the World Without Hunger Conference in Addis Ababa 🌍 As I reflect on this past week, I feel a sense of inspiration and urgency. I’m inspired by many African countries’ drive towards structural transformation: #Ethiopia for example has more than tripled its GDP per capita in the last 15 years and went from wheat importer to wheat #exporter. At the same time, globally, 733 million still face #hunger today and by 2030 it is projected that this figure decreases to 530 million only. Therefore, our World Without Hunger Conference brought together around 1,500 stakeholders from almost 100 countries, including 5 heads of state, 25 ministers, and numerous private sector and IFIs leaders, to share knowledge, present investment opportunities, and announce historic pledges. The launch of the joint UNIDO-FAO study Ending Hunger is Possible: An Income-Generating Approach through Value Addition, provides a clear action plan for policymakers, investors and the development community seeking to end hunger: 1. Invest in Agricultural modernization, such as precision agriculture, improved seed varieties, and sustainable farming practices. 2. Build and maintain essential infrastructure such as irrigation systems, roads, storage facilities, and electricity networks. 3. Develop local agri-food processing industries to increase the value of agricultural products. These investments are crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, and improving market access. This requires a rapid expansion of financial support to small and medium-sized producers and agribusinesses – for example through microfinance, credit schemes, and investment funds tailored to the needs of SMEs, smallholders and rural enterprises. That is why we are extremely pleased that yesterday, Sheikh Ebrahim bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI), has pledged to mobilize 20% of Islamic Financial Institutions’ loans and advancements towards #SME development in low-income countries. At the same time, the Union of Arab Banks has reiterated its pledge of 1 trillion USD towards the SDGs. This is a significant milestone for #development finance. And UNIDO can play a decisive role in implementing this. Let us use the spirit of the conference, join forces and make our contribution to a world without hunger. This is what we signed up for in the Addis Ababa Call to Action.
