It is the existential crisis that is not going away. The world has entered a critical state of climate emergency. We're on track to hurtle past the Paris Agreement's target of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, warns a research paper published by a team of international scientists in the journal BioScience. Australia has already gone past 1.5 degrees, the State of the Climate report by the nation's science agency CSIRO and The Bureau of Meteorology reveals today. Australia's sea levels are rising, its number of snow days are decreasing, and the nation's rainfall is becoming more extreme. It also finds that while human-caused carbon dioxide emissions have plateaued over the past decade after a century-long increase, these efforts aren't enough to reverse the growth in global fossil fuel emissions.
