  • Splash into this week's On Country classroom as we learn about Kauwi (water)! 💦 Our students learn that all living things need Kauwi (pronunced cow-wi) to survive, covering 3/4 of the Earth's surface! That's a lot of Kauwi! 🌏 Did you know that the Kauwi you drink today is the same your ancestor's drank over 60,000 years ago! There are many traditional uses for water by the Aboriginal people, such as story telling, drinking/fishing, and geographical location. As our Elder's remind us, "If you look after Country, Country will look after you." Let’s celebrate that wisdom as we strengthen our bond with our incredible land we live on everyday! 🌱 Are you curious about our Education Modules and how they can be translated into your region's language? Reach out at oncountry@abcau.com.au and let's work together! 📩

  • This week in our bush classrooms, we're jumping into the amazing life of Ngurtu! 🐸 Pronounced nurt-dool, this is the Kaurna translation of our hopping friend! Ngurtu starts water based as a tadpole, transforming into land based frogs. These amphibians can breathe through their skin to regulate moisture! 💧 Ngurtu may be a totem animal for Aboriginal people in certain regions. As our Elders say, "If you look after Country, Country will look after you". Let’s honor this understanding by deepening our bond with the land and its incredible wildlife. • Say hello to Kambarang, the season of growth and birth! 🌼 Australia is bursting with the golden glow of ‘sunshine yellow’ blossoms, as the sun’s warmth returns in full force. Kambarang, the season of new life and wildflowers, is here! The seasons play a vital role in the cultural and ecological knowledge of the Noongar people. The six seaons are; - Birak: December - January - Bunuru: February - March - Djeran: April - May - Makuru: June - July - Djilba: August - September - Kambarang: October - November Traditionally, Kambarang is when the Noongar people would have moved towards the coast in search of freshwater crayfish, frogs and tortoises. 🐟 These beautiful pictures of blossoming wildflowers was captured On-Country in Kalgoorlie, WA! Keep an eye out for the Moodjar, Western Australia's native Christmas tree blooming in Kambarang. This tree holds deep spiritual meaning for the Noongar people, signifing warmer days ahead! ☀️
