Each year, 29 September holds a special significance for police throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands. It is a day for staff to pause and to honour officers whose lives have been cut short while performing their duty as a police officer. This important day is also a time to remember police officers who have lost their lives through illness or other circumstances. ACIC CEO Heather Cook was honoured to attend the Australian Federal Police National Service today and lay a wreath on behalf of the ACIC and Australian Institute of Criminology.
Sunday, 29 September, is National Police Remembrance Day. Events are being held across the country today to commemorate police officers who lost their lives while serving our communities. Sadly, this year, five touchstones will be added to the wall of the National Police Memorial in Canberra. South Australia Police Brevet Sergeant Jason Christopher Doig who was fatally shot when confronting an armed suspect on 17 November 2023. NSW Police Force Sergeant Peter Stone who died while rescuing his son from a rip at a beach on the NSW far South Coast on 1 January, 2023. WA Police Force Senior Constable Glenn Murray who sustained serious injuries when his vehicle crashed on 1 July 1996. He never recovered from these injuries and sadly passed away on December 2, 2022. Also being added to the memorial are two officer’s from Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services. Mounted Constable Arthur Clapp who lost his life in 1927 while patrolling the construction camps near Mataranka, and Mounted Constable Thomas McNulty who fell overboard and drowned in 1917 while escorting a witness back to Darwin via sea. Each touchstone represents a police officer who has served with distinction and is honoured not only for the sacrifice made while protecting their communities, but also for their service to the nation. Please join us in extending our condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who have fallen.

Victim-based crimes such as human trafficking, child sexual exploitation, and online offenses are not only a violation of human rights but also a profitable venture for organised crime groups. These criminals are relentless in their pursuit of profit, exploiting the innocent without remorse. We use our full range of capabilities to collect, analyse and share #MissionCriticalIntelligence in order to prevent and disrupt these networks. Our efforts extend to aiding in the development of policies, regulations, and laws to lessen the occurrence of these victim-based crimes. You too can contribute to the fight against abuse. Through National Task Force Morpheus, partner agencies use their full range of capabilities to proactively and collaboratively target the highest OMCG risks to Australia. Congratulations to all involved in the great success of the national week of action!
Next week is Book Week in Australia. But last week? Last week was Taskforce Morpheus. With the sole aim of causing maximum disruption to outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMCGs), the ABF joined forces with our partner agencies for a targeted week of action. Taskforce Morpheus is a joint initiative through which the ABF, Australian state and territory police, Australian Federal Police, Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, Defence Australia, Australian Taxation Office, AUSTRAC, Services Australia and NZ Police collaboratively target the highest threat outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMCG) impacting Australia. Our #IllicitTobaccoTaskForce also worked with Therapeutic Goods Administration, NSW Health, Attorney-General's Department – Official and other partners to target the illicit tobacco and vaping market, which has quickly become a lucrative option for criminal networks.
