Digitising Smallholder Value Chains

About us

🚨 Urgent need for digitisation of smallholder agricultural value chains. The emerging complexities of global sustainability legislation accentuate the necessity for digital transformation in agriculture. Digital tools and data-driven approaches are not only key to unlocking the potential of smallholder farmers but are also vital in ensuring compliance with international standards. By embracing digital solutions, smallholder farmers, their cooperatives, and other exporters and buyers can streamline their operations, enhance transparency, and meet the stringent requirements set forth by global sustainability initiatives. ↴ Who are we? AgUnity is a technology company digitising smallholder agriculture value chains in emerging markets. We offer easy-to-implement digital solutions designed specifically for the needs of traders, export/importers, cooperatives, national governments, and commodity authorities. Tackling issues of inefficiency, lack of transparency, and lack of trust, our team's 8 years in the field have equipped them with the market knowledge and skills required to engage with communities in emerging markets effectively. We are dedicated to improving sustainability and ensuring compliance with critical global regulations, such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the upcoming EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) regulation. Our work, notably our collaboration with the Oromia Coffee Farmers' Cooperative Union (OCFCU) in Ethiopia, embodies our commitment to global empowerment. This initiative has successfully digitised tens of thousands of farmer records, setting a precedent for future digital transformations in agriculture. For the past 30 years, the world has raced ahead with technology—simplifying our lives in ways we now take for granted. But millions of smallholder farmers have been left behind while many of us have moved forward. These farmers don’t need luxury tech; they need basic tools to connect with buyers, access seeds, and track their transactions. They represent 3 billion people and produce 75% of the world’s food, yet their challenges have been largely ignored. At AgUnity, we’re changing that. For the past eight years, we’ve partnered with smallholder farmers, listening to what they need and developing simple, effective digital solutions that truly make a difference. Our mission is clear: No one should be left behind in the race for progress. Check out the video to see how AgUnity is bridging this gap and creating real opportunities for the farmers who feed the world. 🌐 https://lnkd.in/gF4ABa_E #AgUnity #SmallholderFarmers #DigitalInclusion #AgTech #NoOneLeftBehind

In the lush landscapes of western Kenya, fields of African indigenous vegetables like spicy amaranth and slimy jute mallow flourish under the care of dedicated women farmers. These vegetables are more than just crops; they are vital sources of nutrition and income for local communities. Yet, the journey from farm to table has not always been smooth for these smallholder farmers. 🎥 “The Vegetable Connection” is a 25-minute documentary that tells the story of these Kenyan women using AgUnity’s blockchain-based smartphone application to buy and sell their vegetables more effectively. Award-winning filmmaker Bethany Teague captures the essence of African agricultural ingenuity and innovation in this documentary, which was guided by Virginia Tech researchers Dr. Jessica Agnew and Dr. Ralph Hall, Egerton University lecturer joseph mwangi, and AgUnity’s Program Director Nurvitria Mumpuniarti. Using a human-centered design approach, Virginia Tech, Egerton University, and AgUnity collaborated to adapt AgUnity’s technology to support food security through the sale of African indigenous vegetables (AIVs). Through a LASER PULSE research award funded by USAID, Agnew, Hall, and Mwangi researched the pain points in the AIV value chain and the opportunities for blockchain to tackle issues of trust and transparency. We invite you to watch “The Vegetable Connection” to gain deeper insights into how innovative technology empowers women farmers, enhances food security, and promotes sustainable agriculture. #TheVegetableConnection #WomenInAgriculture #FoodSecurity #Kenya

🌱 Happy Monday, AgUnity community. As we kick off the week, we’re excited to continue sharing our journey toward transforming agriculture in emerging markets. This isn’t just the start of another week—it’s the beginning of a series in which we’ll explore how empowering cooperatives, traders, commodity buyers, and smallholder farmers drive systemic change across agricultural value chains. At AgUnity, our mission goes beyond technology. We’re addressing a broken system by removing trade barriers, eliminating exploitative intermediaries, and connecting farmers directly with buyers who care. By leveraging our digital solutions, farmers gain real-time market insights, enabling them to meet market demands and negotiate fair prices. This transparency bridges the gap between supply and demand, fostering sustainable trade that benefits farmers and buyers. ↴ What’s Ahead and Why It Matters: 💠 Digital Transformation & Innovation: Our tools—AgUnity Data Farm, Co-op Manager, Field Apps, and Cropslist—enhance cooperative management, increase efficiency, expand market access, and ensure compliance with global regulations like #EUDR and #CS3D, helping cooperatives and unions prepare for global demands. 💠 Systemic Change & Ecosystem Building: By equipping cooperatives and farmers with tools for data management, traceability, and market readiness, we’re creating a transparent and equitable agricultural ecosystem. This enables companies sourcing from emerging markets to ensure sustainable, compliant sourcing while supporting vital communities. 💠 Empowerment & Inclusivity: We’re empowering farmers with direct market access and real-time insights, allowing them to produce what the market needs and negotiate fair prices. We aim to connect farmers with ethical buyers to foster sustainable trade. As November approaches, we’ll explore these topics further, setting the stage for a future where every smallholder farmer is integral to the global agricultural ecosystem. Here’s to a month of innovation, collaboration, and impactful change. #DigitalAgriculture #BeyondCompliance #TechForGood Ready to take the first step toward a sustainable and compliant future? 📢 EUDR Enforcement Delay: Urgent Procedure Approved Today, the European Parliament approved the urgent procedure for the 12-month delay in enforcing the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). While the official debate and vote on the proposal are still pending, the common sentiment is that the delay will be accepted, especially with the Council’s approval already in place. Although the European Commission’s proposal to delay enforcement came as a surprise a few weeks ago, many had already anticipated it through circulating rumours. Now, it’s crucial that we use the additional time wisely. There is still a great deal of work ahead for businesses, policymakers, and producers to ensure readiness. Let’s work together to make sure everyone is prepared for the new deadlines, assuming the Parliament will approve the delay in a few weeks. Exciting days ahead! I’ll be in Brussels and the Netherlands this week to engage with key stakeholders around the digital transformation of smallholder value chains for traceability and transparency, especially in light of the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). At AgUnity we are focusing on supporting cooperatives and unions with the data required to ensure compliance and sustain their access to European markets. I’ll as well be meeting with commodity traders/buyers to discuss how they can support smallholder farmers in providing the critical data needed for EUDR and beyond. There’s a growing demand for transparency, and ensuring that data flows smoothly from the farm level is essential to meeting these new market requirements. If you’re working on EUDR, supply chain digitisation, or related initiatives and are in Brussels or the Netherlands, feel free to reach out – I’d be happy to connect and explore potential collaborations. #sustainability #smallholderfarming #ethicaltrade #supplychain #deforestation
