About us

Allen & Unwin is an independent Australian publishing company, first established in Australia in 1976 as a subsidiary of the British firm George Allen & Unwin Ltd, which was founded by Sir Stanley Unwin in August 1914 and went on to become one of the leading publishers of the twentieth century. Allen & Unwin Australia Pty Ltd became independent in July 1990 by means of a management buy-out when the UK firm was bought by HarperCollins. Now known simply as "Allen & Unwin" the company went on to become the most successful "independent" in Australia and these days publishes up to 250 new titles a year. We publish across a broad range of areas including literary and commercial fiction, popular and serious non-fiction - including biography, memoir, history, true crime, politics, current affairs and travel - academic and professional, children's books and books for teenagers. Amongst the many authors published by Allen & Unwin are Alex Miller, Christos Tsiolkas, Garth Nix, Jodi Picoult, Kate Morton, Michael Connelly, Thomas Keneally, Peter Corris, Peter Garrett, Paul Keating, Stephanie Dowrick and Christopher Hitchens. As well as publishing our own extensive list of titles, Murdoch Books is now part of Allen & Unwin and we are the Australian and New Zealand agents for a number of other fine publishers. We are co-sponsor and publisher of the annual Australian/Vogel's Literary Award, and in conjunction with Faber & Faber offer writing courses with the Faber Writing Academy in Sydney and Melbourne.

We're thrilled to congratulate Charlotte Wood on her 2024 Booker Prize shortlisting for Stone Yard Devotional. Wood is the first Australian to be shortlisted for the prize since Richard Flangan won in 2014. No Australian female writer has ever won the prize.   A deeply moving novel about forgiveness, grief, and what it means to be 'good', Stone Yard Devotional is utterly compelling, haunting, and enthralling – and reconfirms Wood as one of Australia's foremost writers. ‘It’s a book we can’t wait to put into the hands of readers,’ the judges said in their comments.   Of her shortlisting, Wood said, ‘I’m overjoyed that the Booker judges have included my novel on their shortlist for this year. Stone Yard Devotional is the most personal book I have ever written, and in large part it’s a tribute to my late mother, whom I loved so much. We hear a lot about bad mothers in contemporary fiction but not so much about good ones, possibly because they’re harder to make interesting on the page. I’m beyond grateful that this amazing group of judges – such seriously talented artists and thinkers – have seen fit to bring this global attention to my work, and in doing so have put real value on the type of novel that leaves ample space for a reader to enter, and invites that reader to sink into the work quietly and deeply. I’m just so honoured, and in fact am still having a hard time processing the news.’   Cate Paterson, Publishing Director at Allen and Unwin said, ‘Everyone at Allen & Unwin is so proud of Charlotte Wood’s outstanding achievement. We knew the magnificent Stone Yard Devotional deserved its place on the shortlist, but you can never predict these things. The whole company is celebrating.’   Jenny Darling, Charlotte’s literary agent said, ‘I am so happy for Charlotte, for the short-listing of this marvel of a novel. It pulls you in by a thread and you cannot let go. It will never leave me.’   The announcement of the winner of the Booker Prize 2024 will take place in London on Tuesday, 12 November.

We're thrilled to announce the publication of One Hundred Years of Betty by bestselling author Debra Oswald. One the eve of her 100th birthday, Betty Rankin tells her life story from growing up in London during the war, emigrating to Australia, and making her way in post war Australia through decades of massive social change. Publisher Alex Craig said: ‘In One Hundred Years of Betty Debra Oswald effortlessly traverses a century of social change, particularly for women, to recount the extraordinary life of an ordinary woman. Betty is a fabulous creation – funny, candid, passionate and always curious, a woman who never gives up despite what life throws at her. I can’t wait for readers to meet the incomparable, unforgettable Betty.’ ‘I’ve always loved stories with a long sweep of time. I found myself thinking about my mother and how much the world changed during her lifetime – an exhilarating but sometimes infuriating ride. So, in this novel, I set out to travel with one woman over a hundred years,’ said Oswald. ‘I hope there’s a special sort of satisfaction in devouring the entirety of a character’s life: Betty as a child, teenager, lover, worker, friend, mother, activist, writer, recluse, phenomenally old woman, angry woman, loving woman, all of it.’ One Hundred Years of Betty will be published in Australia and New Zealand in March 2025.
