This beautiful home with its soaring cathedral ceiling had excellent bones and was a true “diamond in the rough.” However, the lack of natural light and a central staircase disrupted both flow and function. Enter the jewelers. AKA Andever. • Through expanded glazing and a new gable window, our design was able to re-connect with both earth and sky. • Moving the staircase to the corner improved flow with design details that echo the beautiful oregon timber roof beams. • The original beams are referenced elsewhere in key details including the kitchen island and hidden bar joinery. The resulting space enables light to dance and play against the many textures and new surfaces. Creating all the right elements to let this diamond sparkle and shine! 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐛? Developments are generally perceived to be negative and extractive. But when introducing something new to a community, both the developer team and community need to think beyond the site, looking at a wider suburb-level context and approaching it from the lens of repair. - What has been damaged or lost? - What can be improved in the wider area? - What role will this development play in the larger community? Addressing these questions indicates a much-wider ambition that shifts the dial from distrust to trust in the development team. With this approach, negotiations with Council and neighbours can take on a more positive collaborative approach. Research has shown that resident communities who feel connected to their suburbs report better wellbeing. By ensuring that developmental interventions (including architecture) support the community, we can help the community repair and strengthen their connection to their suburb, thereby supporting overall wellbeing. Prioritizing good outcomes, a flourishing neighborhood and community. Both inside and out. Yes, you got that right. Every Monday morning, we bond over a cup of coffee and casual chat on all things design & strategy, away from the office. 𝑪𝑪 #2: 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 & 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆 Regardless of who is the lead on a project, we are always available to discuss, problem-solve and align. We build relationships that last well beyond the role. 𝑪𝑪 #3: 𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆 & 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒐𝒏 We recognize and celebrate our diverse backgrounds, cultures and perspectives. We are each other’s biggest champions, both inside and outside the workplace. The best part? We do it naturally. Because mental health begins with us, both in our homes and at our workplace. Drop us a comment on what practices you have in place to prioritize mental health at your organization. Marking the 3rd year anniversary of our Curve House renovations – a heritage-listed Federation home circa 1905 in South Yarra. Our design pays homage to heritage through complimentary curved details, rich textures and hidden spaces, while synthesizing space through a careful selection of materials and colour. Melbourne’s built fabric matters. It is more than just how our city looks and feels. Our built environment contributes to how productive we are, how easy and safe it is to move around, and how best we can look after our health and wellbeing. With Melbourne on the cusp of extraordinary growth and change, excellent design and planning needs to be a priority for every candidate in the upcoming election. Melbourne By Design was launched with the idea that having a Councillor on Melbourne City Council who understood the design of our city – with deep experience and expertise in the built environment – would significantly benefit all who live and work in Melbourne. Across the election campaign period, I have engaged in comprehensive discussions with one Lord Mayoral candidate who shares my vision of a Melbourne City Council informed by urban form expertise. I’m pleased to announce that I have accepted Jamal Hakim’s offer to join Team Hakim as their Number 1 councillor candidate. I long have been impressed with the ethical leadership of Jamal Hakim as a City of Melbourne Councillor. His focus on supporting and celebrating Melbourne’s extraordinarily diverse communities is laudable. Jamal will make an exceptional and empathetic Lord Mayor – and I am proud to support his campaign. In this election campaign, I was already planning on taking the ‘Hakim Pledge’ to be fully transparent with campaign donations in real time, and I believe it is something that all candidates should do. Joining Team Hakim allows me to support Jamal's campaign as Lord Mayor while standing firm on the values that inspired me to launch Melbourne by Design and my own election campaign. I am also excited to work alongside the brilliant Esther Anatolitis on an updated Postcode 3000 policy that will help support our creative industries and see the CBD better utilise its office buildings. Esther’s arts, media and urban policy expertise make her the Deputy Lord Mayor that Melbourne needs. Finally, I would like to assure all my wonderful supporters that my values and the mission have not changed – only strengthened. This is about working collaboratively to achieve the larger vision of a better designed Melbourne. Join us. And we’re on a roll! Our second townhouse planning approval in as many months and tripling the residential density on site. Someone once said, “The road to success runs uphill.” Literally so, in the case of this proposed development project in Greensborough. Indeed, what makes this approval all the more special is the site’s strong suburban-bushland character and its location on a steep slope with a maximum fall of 14.1 meters from the east to the west. Our proposal replaces the existing single-storey weatherboard house with three two-storey dwellings, gradually stepped up with the upper forms modified to reflect the existing site contours and optimize for solar access. Adopting a mixed palette of brick and corrugated cladding allows the development to blend in with both the original and the newer residences along the street. A big thank you to our clients for your continued trust and partnership! Navigating a complex project and site? Fret not.
